Bastion of Righteousness

The Bastion of Righteousness was founded by a company of half-celestials many centuries ago in an effort to confront the growing tide of darkness and evil that they saw encroaching on the Shards. They have always striven against any sign of the Taint of darkness, and have embraced Purity as a source of strength in the fight.

Their zeal sometimes elicits calls for moderation from some who claim to be on their side. But they know that any sign of weakness, any sign of compromise with the enemy necessarily allows the darkness to grow. Thus, in times of doubt, the Bastion agree to err on the side of destruction of possible evil-doers.

  • phyle badge: Members of the Bastion display the image of an armored or mailed fist on their shields (or in another prominent place if for some strange reason they aren’t carrying shields).
  • governance: The Bastion has a strict heirarchy – inferiors are expected to obey superiors without question.

  • member obligations: All phylists are expected to participate in militias organized for the defence of local phyle property. Furthermore, the phyle regularly organizes crusades and other large expeditions – all members are expected to make themselves available for such activities.
  • member privileges: The Bastion provides armor and weapons to its members at cost (half listed price), and also provides weapon- and armorsmithing services. The cost of enchantment and special materials (e.g. cold iron) are not covered by these discounts.

  • relations with other phyles: The Bastion are on relatively good terms with the Sisters of Mercy and the Regium. They get along tolerably well with the Hospitalers most of the time. They and the Talon have a large amount of grudging respect for each other. The tainted phyles are universally reviled by the Bastion, as are the Family, the Drummers, the Broken Bond, and the All-Seeing Eye. Many phyles find the rigid zealotry of the Bastion hard to take.
  • economy: The Bastion controls a few shards here and there, and exacts feudal taxes from the peasants thereon. They also have a tendency to expropriate the property of evil-doers whom they defeat. The Bastion does not generally allow its members to be hired as mercenaries, but will accept rewards from people they have assisted.
  • don’t mess with us because: The Bastion are extremely well-armed, are very competent at defending themselves. Furthermore, they have a tendency to strike back. They don’t like to use the word vendetta, but others (quietly) have suggested that it’s a good term for what they sometimes do to phyles that have troubled them.
  • common religions: The Ancient Way, the Hidden Sun
  • restrictions, attitudes towards purity and taint: The Bastion is a Pure faction. Purity is seen as a holy energy which aids in the fight against evil. Members are expected to avoid Taint as much as possible, and seek out Purity.
