Classes and Races
Classes and Races available
A character’s selection of class (and, to a lesser extent, race) interact with that character’s selection of phyle.
- Barbarians are not accepted by the Bastion of Righteousness, the Dead College, the Hospitalers, the Overlords, or the Regium. They are especially favoured by the Drummers, the Broken Bond, and the Maul.
- Bards are not easily accepted by the Bastion of Righteousness, the Overlords, or the Regium. On the other hand, it sometimes seems like there’s no one in the All-Seeing Eye who isn’t a bard.
- Clerics are accepted by all phyles. Note that a cleric of a Pure phyle must be a Pure cleric, a cleric of a Tainted phyle must be a Tainted cleric, and a cleric of a phyle strongly opposed to both Purity and Taint cannot be either a Pure cleric or a Tainted cleric. Each phyle has a list of acceptable cleric domains, and a cleric must select a religion and domains which are compatible with this list.
- Druids will not become members of Pure or Tainted phyles. All others are open to them, although they are most commonly found in the Green Way.
- Fighters are accepted by all phyles except the Hospitalers
- Monks don’t fit in with the Drummers, the Maul, or the All-Seeing Eye.
- Paladins do not exist in this campaign setting. A Paladin-like prestige class (the Pure Knight) is available to members of Pure phyles.
- Rangers rarely join most Pure or Tainted phyles, and specifically aren’t accepted by the Hospitalers. They are common in the Green Way, the Tunnelers, and the Drummers.
- Rogues are accepted by all phyles except the Bastion of Righteousness.
- Sorcerers are accepted by all phyles except some of the more extreme ends of the Green Way, and the more sheltered members of the Mutual Defense Co-operative. Many (most?) members of the Clock Tenders are Sorcerers.
- Wizards do not exist in this campaign setting. In the Polychotomy, all arcane magic is spontaneously cast.
- Psionic classes (Psion, Psychic Warrior, Soulknife, Wilder) do not exist in this campaign setting.
- Rules about core classes from other sources are found on the pages on the specific books.
Among the races, we find these affinities:
- Dwarves are common in the Bastion of Righteousness, the Regium, and the Tunnelers, but are little appreciated in the All-Seeing Eye.
- Elves have _Sorcerer) as their favoured class. They are common in the Green Way, the All-Seeing Eye, the Broken Bond, the Drummers, and the Sisters of Mercy. They are rare in the Dead College, the Family, the Overlords, and the Sign of Swine.
- Gnomes are well-represented in such phyles as the Clock Tenders, the Tunnelers, the All-Seeing Eye, the Shadowy Men, and the Drummers. Few join the Bastion of Righteousness, the Maul, or the Overlords.
- Half-Elves are rare in this campaign setting, as humans and elves cannot naturally breed. What half-elves do exist are the result of magical and genetic tampering, but breed true with other half-elves. Half-elves do not show any particular preferences for phyles.
- Half-Orcs are rare in this campaign setting, as humans and orcs cannot naturally breed. What half-orcs do exist are the result of magical and genetic tampering, but breed true with other half-orcs. Half-orcs do not show any particular preference for phyles.
- Halflings are well-represented in the Family, the Sign of Swine, the Shadowy Men, the Drummers, and the All-Seeing Eye, but are not unusual in any of the phyles.
- Humans are common to the point of banality in most phyles.
- Other player races may be allowed upon consultation with the DM – many races exist somewhere in the Polychotomy. At the beginning of the campaign, only races with a 0 LA will be considered. Specific races from other sources are discussed on the pages on the specific books.
