Restitutor Orbis

You will not find a greater center of learning west of Constantinople than you will in Britain; and they may, in their own way, even surpass the emperor’s capital. The Britons have two traditions: the Roman, calling upon Greek philosophers and Classical poetry, and the British, relying upon the memorization of ancient lore and a vast oral tradition.

  • Overcome: An academic task — translating a letter, reading a book, or some such similar task — will likely involve Learning, as will learning some new task, skill, or story.
  • Create an Advantage: You can use Learning to declare certain details or facts about the situation as true, by creating a scene aspect. You can also make Learning rolls to discover similar details or facts already on the scene that relate to something you’ve read or learned about.
  • Defend: Under some specific circumstances, you might be able to defend yourself in a mental or social conflict with things you’ve learned or your reputation as a scholar or learned person.

Special: By default, if you have a Roman name, you know Latin, and if you have a British name, you know Brythonic. You can understand most of the other language, but you cannot use it very well. If you have Learning at Fair (+2) or higher, then you are fluent in both languages. See the Foreign Tongue stunt below for knowing other languages.

Stunts

Classical Education [Roman]

You have received a Roman-style education. You gain a +2 bonus to Learning to impress others with your education.

Philosophus [Roman]

Requires Classical Education. Your social stress track is determined by your Learning skill, rather than your Patronage skill.

Bardic Memory [British]

You gain a +2 bonus to any use of Learning to memorize long passages.

Specialty

You have specialized in a particular area of learning, like medicine, law, art, etc. You have a +2 bonus to Learning where your speciality applies. You may take this stunt multiple times, each time with a different specialty.

Advanced Specialty

Requires Specialty. You have specialized in an even more specific field. For instance, if your original specialty was art, you might have specialized in poetry, mosaics, or statuary. You gain an additional +2 bonus to Learning where your more specific specialty applies. This stacks with your bonus from your original specialty, giving you a +2 bonus to your specialty in general, and a +4 total bonus where your more specific focus applies.

Bilingual

You are fluent in both Latin and Brythonic. Note that you can have this simply by having Learning at Fair (+2) or higher, so this stunt is only useful if your Learning is relatively low.

Foreign Tongue

You know a barbarian language. The most useful would be English, Pictish, or Irish, the other three languages spoken in the island. You may take this stunt multiple times, each time with a different language.

Man of the Cloth

Your high concept must refer to your position as a cleric in the Church. You gain a +2 bonus to all Learning rolls relating to religion, and your social stress track is determined by your Learning skill, rather than your Patronage skill.

Physician

Once per session you can reduce someone else’s mild or moderate physical consequence by one level of severity (moderate to minor or minor to nothing at all) by succeeding on a Learning roll with a difficulty of Fair (+2) for a minor consequence or Good (+3) for moderate. You need at least a half hour with the patient for a mild consequence, or an hour for a moderate one. You can’t use this on yourself.

Surgeon

Requires Physician. Once per session, you can reduce someone else’s severe physical consequence to a moderate consequence by engaging in a conflict with the consequence itself. The consequence has a 6-point stress box, but cannot take its own consequences. After each attack against the consequence, the consequence makes a Great (+4) attack on the patient, which the patient defends against with Athletics. If the patient is taken out, the conflict fails. If you succeed on the conflict, the severe consequence is reduced to a moderate one. Anyone with the Physician stunt can use Learning to create an advantage in this conflict. Anyone with the Herbalist stunt can use Wildcraft to create an advantage in this conflict.
