Howard Journal 5
Once things had calmed down a little bit in the medical center I tried to reach a few family members. I couldn’t remember the number of the room that Candy was in but I was able to reach Howard Jr. He let me know that he and Eric were getting the family together in a couple of rooms to try and keep everyone safe and calm. I hung up after telling Howard I loved him and before I could make another call Adam Cooper came on the speakers letting everyone know that there was an emergency on the ship and that all passengers and crew should be heading to the Walt Disney Theater as soon as possible. He also let us know that the Captain had called in support from the nearest Coast Guard cutter.
I went back to find Dr Rivet with the intention of letting him know I was going to take a security guard to go back and get my family and get them to the Walt Disney. I found him treating a middle aged man and we had just exchanged a greeting when a loud crash and a moaning came from the back of the medical bay. We stayed quiet and we both jumped when the rattle of gunfire came from the entrance and then stopped. Dr Rivet and I grabbed whatever was handy and cautiously opened the door. The bitten security guard was lying dead in the hallway, the rest of the security guards staring at him with bugged out eyes.
Rivet and I moved out to see if anyone was hurt when gunfire and screams erupted in the reception area, there were more creatures coming in. We gathered Miss Helms and Tammy while the security guards fought with the creatures. Dr Rivet muttered something and charged out the back door and then the shooting stopped. As I moved out to see what was happening I heard Rivet shout in surprise and then silence. Rivet came back in the storage room, his shirt and pants spattered with blood and pieces of…. He checked that we were ok and then went out the main door telling us to stay there. I gave both Tammy and Miss Helms a look to try and bolster their confidence and came out to find Rivet crushing the skull of the last of the security guards. He looked up and his eyes were a bit wild as he looked at me. I imagine mine were as well. We retreated to the storage room and were just starting to discuss what we should do when the phone rang. After a brief conversation Rivet told me that it was Cooper and he was ordering him to bring medical supplies to the Walt Disney. There were 12 wounded already there and more were expected to show at any time, and then he apparently hung up.
Rivet and I were talking about how we wanted to get up to the room when both of us kind of came to the same conclusion at the same time. These things were people coming back to life after being bitten. I learned later that Rivet also figured out that the fever was an indication that they were sick with whatever was going to cause this reanimation. Rivet grabbed the phone asked me the number of the Disney Theater and called again.
The conversation started off well with Rivet letting the person that answered the phone know that the sick people could rise but then Cooper got on the phone and it went down hill fast. After some confusion about who was on the phone on our end Rivet was able to relay that the sick people could be coming back to life. The last thing I heard from Cooper’s end of the phone was “You!! Security guard, shoot these sick people” while Rivet was yelling into the phone to stop…
He looked dumbstruck as he hung up the phone and then quickly asked me the code for the PA. I gave it to him and he punched it in and said “Adam Cooper needs to be stopped. Hes going to start shooting sick people in the theater” As he hung up the phone I watched his face slowly transform from the doctor determined to stop someone from doing a horrible crime to the doctor realizing that he had just made a ship-wide announcement indicating that crew members, in possibly the only safe place on the ship, were going to be shooting sick people.
Stunned and unable to figure out what to do Captain Robert’s got on the PA telling Cooper to stand down and to stop using the God Damned PA. Not the most Disney-like statement but understandable for all that.
We started gathering supplies. I collected up a backpack and got the gear from the fallen security guards. I gave a key card to Rivet and a gun to Tammy and to Miss Helms. We then had a brief discussion what to do with the sick people. Neither Rivet or I could sanction killing them without knowing that they would die for sure, but we also couldn’t leave them to die and come back to life. We decided to zip-tie them to the beds to keep them there in case….well just in case. We gathered up everyone, got Tammy in a wheel chair, piled supplies on a gurney and headed out. I took the lead, heading back to the staff elevators, with the thought there would be potentially less of these creatures to deal with. Running down the hallway we came to a dead end where a bulkhead door should have been. The security guard informed me that it was back opposite the way we went. I didn’t remember the Magic and the Wonder being different. As we headed back the ship lurched sending all of us sprawling. I heard Rivet cry out and pain as I slowly got up. I looked over and the lights flickered briefly and then went out. I remembered breathing heavily and wondering what could have caused a ship this size to have staggered this much…
