The village of Gelcliff was at one time a prosperous small town due to the valuable crystal deposits discovered in the cliffs over looking the sea. The major loads of crystal have long since been mined out, and the village is mostly abandoned with less than a hundred hardy or stubborn souls hanging on by fishing.
The old mines have been overrun by vermin, and although rumors occasionally pop up of yet undiscovered wealth deep within, nothing has come to light in years. It is likely that these rumors were started by local villagers hoping to draw some adventurer money into town.
Nominally, the village owes allegiance to the Baron of Ravenford, but in practice it is ruled by three village elders.
Since the old town has a usable harbor, less scrupulous merchants occasionally use Gelcliff to move merchandise that needs to avoid the eyes of the authorities of more major towns. The Baron always moves in to stop any overt pirate activity in the village.
