The town of Wynkern is primarily a stopover on the road to South Point. The three thousand inhabitants make their living like scavengers off the shipping trade up the road, and the poor sick souls trying to travel down the road. South Point maintains an emigration office in Wynkern that issues a limited number of passes and occasional visas to visit South Point. These passes are made of gold, and their worth is considerably more than their metal value. Mercenary guard duty is a growth industry in Wynkern as keeping a pass is often a deadly serious endeavor that can be almost as difficult as getting one. Another less honest trade than mercenary is the underground smuggling across the border.
Wynkern stands at the last hospitable spot on the road to the South Point wall. The lands south of Wynkern and north of the wall are barren, lifeless and toxic, with water as corrupt and deadly as the blessed waters of South Point are pure. And the reputed underground tunnels between Wynkern and the wall are even more deadly than the surface and more likely to lead to a mass burial pit than to the actual walls.
