Robotech: A New Beginning

The MBR-04 main battle Destroid, designated “Thor”, is the result of Project “Thunder”, the first attempt to integrate alien technology scavenged from the Mjolnir with human know-how. The Mk IV is the most recent iteration and the first one to include energy weapons.

The MBR-04 serves as the UNSMC’s primary weapon in armored combat, replacing tanks such as the aging M1 Abrams. As a primary armored unit it excels in its designated duty – shell the hell out of the enemy. The MBR-04 is the second most heavily armored Destroid in the UNS arsenal, only the HWR-00-MkII Grendel is more armored.

The primary armament of the Thor is a pair of particle beam cannons; previous iterations used 105mm rifled cannons. These particle beams are incredibly destructive, capable of punching through a 300 mm steel plate with ease. For comparison, the armor on the VF-1 Valkyrie is equivalent to 400 mm of steel. In addition to the raw impact damage the cannons have the secondary effect of vaporizing armor around the impact location, effectively stripping armor at twice the rate of an equivalent projectile. Not much on earth can stand toe to toe with the MBR-04.

The Thor is designed to accept several jet attachments that allow it to be air dropped quickly. Instead of using a parachute, as was done a decade ago, these jets expend all of their fuel in one massive burst around 50 meters from the ground. The effect is a near total arresting of downward momentum, allowing the MBR-04 to land safely. This is by no means gentle, however, the effect is as if the mech had stepped off of a 50 meter building. The landing is jarring to the pilot, but injuries are rare and the mech is otherwise unaffected.
