Besides the divine origins espoused by the Templars of Khoob and the Prophets of Talkh, the two main theories are that a mad wizard accidentally created enlarged ants or that a mad wizard accidentally opened a portal to a world inhabited by the creatures. Either way, this explains the animosity towards wizards of the general population.
The Claacos are a hive species. Individual Claacos are of four general types. The lowliest are foragers who gather food, dig tunnels and caverns, and care for the queen and larva. Next are the soldiers who fight. Next are the drones who “coordinate” battles and mate with the queen. There is some kind of shared intelligence among the Claacos that is enhanced with the presence of a drone. Finally, there is the queen who produces all of the eggs. Fortunately, the Claacos eagerly war among themselves. They have already killed off all of the large fauna in DaRey and would certainly have killed off every moving creature and eaten every plant to the bare ground if they did not distract themselves with killing each other.
The Claacos slow down in the cold. Their movement and attacks per round are divided by two. They also quickly dehydrate in the absence of ample fresh water and shrivel when exposed to salt water for too long. They thrive in the heat, so specimens get larger and more powerful as one travels south. There are, so far, fortunately no flying breeds of Claacos. They are amazingly robust against magical attacks taking 1/2 damage. Charm-type spells have no effect. Though their meat is soupy and odorous, it is nutritious (see Food in Jaraah) and Claacos are actively hunted. The chitin exoskeletons can be fashioned into armor and other implements. See Claacos Types for more detailed information.
