The Sea Wyvern´s Wake part 2

August 26, 2007 06:19

During the voyage Dalrin and Tristy Sommers, one of Hesse´s girls, had grown close, so when she dragged him into a store cupboard he assumed she wanted to take the relationship further. Unfortunately it was not Tristy but Rowyn Kellani disguised by magic, fortunately for him her attempt to fascinate him and persuade him that a moonlight skinny dip was a good idea failed and he saw through her disguise. She fled up on deck while he called he the alarm (and hitched up his britches). On deck she used her illusions and spells to good effect but Tamzana Alteresine used the magical book, they had discovered in the summer house, to see things as they truly were and so she was cornered and put to the sword.

The next stop for the expedition was the mouth of the Havekihu River to take on fresh water. That night while The Sea Wyvern was anchored it lerched violently to one side. At first Amella thought the ship had slipped it´s anchor and drifted into a uncharted reef, but as the adventurers came on deck they were confronted with an enormous ooze. It´s body was transparent and would have made it´s size impossible to discern if it were not also very sticky and covered in flotsam that had stuck to it over the years. The battle was harsh but eventually they broke the ship free and sent the creature back to the depths from which it came.

Not all encounters were as dangerous as the floatsam ooze and the Blue Slaad on several occasions encounters with the wildlife of the Vohoun Ocean were not as confrontational. Urol would often lecture on the various creatures of the sea and air that would either shadow the boat or be caught on a fishing line. On occasions his discourses were less welcome however, such as the time when a flock of wyvern took interest in the ship´s figurehead and he recounted how they were known to pluck sailors from the deck to feed to their young in their cliff top nests. Then there was the time a dark shadow passed under the The Sea Wyvern and he speculated it was most likely a Kraken that could swallow the small caravel whole, that or a Living Shipwreck, a crablike creature the size of a small island, that wreck ships and place them on their shells as some sort of macabre camouflage or display ritual.

Lavinia had promised Urol a visit to the lost city of Tamoachan, although it was far from lost any more, the ruins had been picked clean of wealth by countless treasure seekers since its discovery by adventurers over a decade ago. Urol however was certain that a rough map and some directions from a traveller he bumped into at Fort Blackwell would lead to a new significant discovery. There was just a small matter of a Basilisk that had made it´s home in that part of the ruin. With our brave adventurers help Urol was able to break into an undiscovered tomb which contained a scale model of ancient Tamoachan much to Urol´s delight. It also contained a caged demonic beast much to our adventurers surprise. The tomb was most likely that of a priest as the mummified corpse wore a set of magical prayer beads the party was happy to but to better use, the party also liberated a magical statue of a bat-like creature it´s purpose unknown but value unquestionable.

Urol suspected it was Olman in origin but the style of carving was more common to the island people, perhaps even those that lived on the Isle of Dread, rather than the mainland culture, how it came to be here he did not even hazard a guess.

The fleet sailed on from the ruins of Tamoachan and within a few days they were rounding the edge of the peninsula, a stretch of waters notorious for pirate attacks, and this tripped proved no different. Thankfully our group of experienced adventurers was more than a match for the motley crew of pirates that hoped to prey on them.

The last outpost of true civilization that the expedition intended to stop at was Fort Greenrock, a remote settlement of monks, but as the fleet rounded the coast it was clear something terrible had happened. The wooden palisade surrounding the fort had been torn apart, and the fort itself had burned to the ground. It appeared whatever grim fate visited the place occurred several days ago for no sign of life or activity was seen from the shore. The Blue Nixie stayed out to sea while The Sea Wyvern entered the harbour to discover what grim fate had befallen the colony.

Inside the walls there were signs of a furious battle long over, black-feathered arrows indicated lizardmen were most likely responsible, but someone or something must have united the tribes for them to have attacked in such numbers. The rallying call for the lizardmen became clear not long after the party landed, as a huge treant lumbered out of the forest leading an army of lizardmen. The adventurers beat a hasty retreat to the ship calling on the elements of wind and snow to delay the enemies advance. What had caused the treant druid to destroy the colony would have to remain a mystery as the expedition sailed on moving away from the coast forced to resupply at the tribal village of Renkrue on the eastern most of the Isles of Axuxal.

The intent was to stay a few days, but in the end the stay was cut short. Avner Meravanchi had proved to be trouble on the voyage from the start demanding his pedigree horse, Thunderstrike, make the trip even though the space and feed it required meant the ship could not take as many supplies as planned. He´d also demanded the captain´s cabin as his own personal quarters, which Amella grumbled about daily for the first fortnight of the voyage. Unfortunately with his family part financing the expedition where his demands could be met, they had to be met. On Renkrue his request however was not only unreasonable but an offence to the whole village. It seems shortly after landing he had become obsessed with a beautiful native girl and had attempted to “purchase” her from her father, who happened to be Chief Ixawhani. The insult had proved so great that even though the adventurers and Lavinia smoothed the waters some they refused to trade with the expedition any loner while Avner was with them.

From Renkrue the expedition sailed south, crossing the Pearl Current. While navigating the Pearl Current they discovered the wreck of a ship burned to the waterline. Pulling alongside they discovered a waterlogged journal hidden in the bilge. Which lead them to believe that this was the wreck of Trantil’s Turn a ship that had changed hands between Tamzana’s family and Trantil’s family on more than one occasion over the years. It indicated that Tamzana’s brother had most likely died along with the crew of the ship.

Taking the journal the small fleet of ships continued on past the island of Ruja. Ruja’s tall cliffs made it impossible to stop and take on fresh water there.

Ruja was the last land they would see before setting sight on the Isle of Dread. Five hundred miles of open sea lay before them but they would make less than half that distance before the first storm hit.
