Pele

Description: Pele or Madame Pele, described in ancient Hawaiian chants as “She-Who-Shapes-The-Sacred-Land” is a goddess of fire, lightning, dance, volcanoes and violence, a daughter of Haumea and Kane Milohai. In modern times, Pele has become the most visible of all the old gods and goddesses. Dwelling in the craters of the Big Island’s Kilauea Volcano, she has been sending ribbons of fiery lava down the mountainside and adding new land around the southeastern shore almost continuously since 1983.

To this day, tales of Pele’s power and peculiarities continue. Whispered encounters with Pele include those of drivers who pick up an old woman dressed all in white accompanied by a little dog on roads in Kilauea National Park, only to look in the mirror to find the back seat empty. Pele’s face has mysteriously appeared in photographs of fiery eruptions, and most people who live in the islands-whether Christian, Buddhist, Shinto, or other-speak respectfully of the ancient goddess. After all, she has destroyed more than 100 structures on the Big Island since 1983, and perhaps even more awesome than that, she has added more than 70 acres of land to the island’s southeastern coastline. As to why Madame Pele dwells in the mortal realm rather than in the Overworld with the rest of her Panetheon is unknown. Some say she was banished from the Overworld by Kāne Milohai for her fiery temper as he once banished her from Tahiti, others that she was sent to serve as a vanguard against the newly escaped Titans and yet others that her return was voluntary in order to protect HER island against those who would destroy it.

Kāmohoalii

Description: Kamohoalii enjoyed lounging in the deep waters around Maui. Especially in the narrow, swift straight between Maui and the ‘kapu’, sacred island of Kahoolawe, where most knew him by another name, that of Kalahiki. His favorite trick around there, was to find the fleet of fishing canoes when they were out of sight of land, and hopelessly lost. Kalahiki would then swim in front of the lead boat and shake his tail. The Kahuna of the fleet, a man learned in the ways of the shark-god, would then order that ‘awa’ be fed to Kalahiki. This potion was made from bitter roots that had no possible use, except as something to ferment into a strong drink. The shark-god would then reward the people by leading them back home through the fog and mist that often cover those waters.

But a man had to be careful when the shark-god approached for some sharks were just simple eaters-of-all, and Kāmohoalii being Lord of all sharks was no different if he hungered or tasted blood in the water. It was times such as these when the god was called the itchy-mouthed, or Uhinipili. There are many tales of large boats sinking in the waters around Maui, with no one surviving to tell of their encounter with either Kalahiki or Uhinipili. The shark-god was also known by many other names, but there was only one of him, and he is still there.

In modern times he has made his way through the world in a variety of fashions. He has worked as a navigator for a Hawaiian Barefoot Cruise line, the director of a world renown Aquarium and techincal advisor on several motion pictures, most notably the Jaws franchise. In fact Kamohoalii has become quite the film buff and considers the invention of motion pictures to be one of mankind’s greatest and most pleasing inventions, and many a modern Scion have earned his favor by percuring for the Shark Lord a new film he hadn’t yet seen. But be warned…Kāmohoalii is a very harsh critic.
