Shards of Light, Shards of Shadow

The Last War

The Last War involved the Five Nations of Galifar in a contest to determine the right of succession to the Empire of Galifar. It raged for over a century, only ending with the destruction of Cyre on the Day of Mourning.

Tensions between the rulers and differences in the emerging culture of the Five Nations are cited as the causes of the conflict; destabilization of the Empire and larger independence fostered during Jarot ir’Wynarn’s paranoid rulership strengthened such dissension. Each of key instigators of the War were said to have their own impetus: Talin of Thrane and Kaius of Karrnath wanted to consider alternatives to the traditional succession (likely ending in their own rule), while Wroann of Breland was certain that her enlightened policies were best for Galifar.

Officially, the war ended with the Treaty of Thronehold, two years after the Day of Mourning. It formally established the independence of the remaining Five Nations and recognized the splinter nations of Zilargo, Darguun, Q’Barra, the Mror Holds, the Eldeen Reaches, Valenar, and the Talenta Plains.

While officially over, several believe the War has yet to end and the current period of peace is only a brief ceasefire before hostilities break out again.
