“The city of Silverymoon is a beautiful place of ancient trees and soaring towers, with curving lines in its stonework and garden plantings adorning every nook and balcony. Areial steeds carry riders on high, magic and learning is revered, music and laughter are heard often in the streets, and the city contains fascinating shops brim-full of maps, books, minor magic items, and beautiful things.
Even more so than Waterdeep, Silverymoon is built on the cooperation between races. Humans, elves, and dwarves all maintain dwellings in the same areas of the city instead of dividing into separate wards. A human home might be built around the base of a tree, with elves using the tree above as part of the walkway to their central tree home, and dwarves caverns beneath the surface."
The central characters in this campaign have all been given lands and titles in and around Silverymoon in return for services rendered in the neverending war against evil and chaos:
The city boasts a conservatory of music, a great library, parks, castle residences and shrines to many of the benign deities of Faerun. The most famous structure is the University of Silverymoon, a great school made up from many once separate colleges. There are various specialist schools and monasteries and a strong military presence in the Knights of Silver, who patrol the city constantly.
The Toll Portal
In the year of 1383 a portal was discovered near to Silverymoon that opened into Sigil, City of Doors. For ten years this portal has been in existence and it is well known by the party who adventured into the Demonweb Pits.
In the course of the last ten years a group of bandits tried to occupy the cave in which the portal is housed, charging over inflated fees for those wishing to travel, and sometimes killing and robbing those unable to defend themselves. Taern Hornblade, the governing Lord of Silverymoon, decided that this was not the spirit with which his city should be associated throughout the multiverse, so about seven years ago he set up a Control Post at the cave with a small army barracks and charged travellers 100GP to use the portal in return for safe entry. Over the last few years a small inn and several stores have sprung up in the area. Interplanar travel is limited to those who can afford the rates but many people come to the area to sell their wares and to seek information from those who come from the other side.
Once the fare is paid, regulated groups are allowed to enter the cave and must use either an iron horseshoe or bridle as a Portal Key. Groups of more than 7 creatures are not allowed to enter the portal and only four groups per day are permitted exit.
