Star Wars: Dawn of Darkness

Kolto is a liquid with powerful healing properties. The substance occurs naturally on the ocean planet Manaan in several of it’s massive chasms beneath the ocean surface. Kolto enjoyed the status of being a principal agent used in every day medpacs and medical facilities across the galaxy for a long time, but millenia ago it’s usage all but stopped due to the discovery of bacta, which is far more powerful and easier to refine for medicinal purposes.

History

Kolto was first discovered on the ocean planet Manaan, which remained the only planet kolto was known to naturally occur on. The native Selkath exploited kolto to a great financial benifit, and even used their status as the suppliers of kolto to ensure their neutrality in the Jedi Civil War nearly four thousand years ago.

The discovery and subsequent use of bacta as a more efficient replacement to kolto was devastating to the planet Manaan and it’s Selkath population. The planet’s only above water city, Ahto City became all but abandoned by the spacer population it was built for and slowly decayed to a near decrepit state it finds itself in to this day. A handful of native Selkath remained in the crumbling Ahto City to tend to the few visitors from off world, but the majority of the Selkath live below the surface and are bitter and resentful to the outside galaxy.

Usage

Like bacta, kolto can be filled into a tank where a submerged patient is then bathed in the substance. Though not at effective as bacta, it’s low cost to purchase has made it an attractive alternative to bacta for impoverished regions of the galaxy.

The player party first encountered Kolto when the Tarisian explained his business venture on Manaan, in which Kolto would be harvested and sold as a cheaper alternative to bacta.

Saga Edition Statistics

Kolto on the galactic market costs 40 credits per 2 kg. Kolto can be used in a bacta tank in conjunction with surgery (see Treat Injury skill, page 74 CRB). If the Treat Injury check succeeds, the patient heals half a number of hit points equal to their character level (rounded up) in addition to what was provided by the Treat Injury check. If a specific tank built to use kolto to it’s full effect is used, the patient will heal a number of hit points equal to their character level minus 1.

When used in a bacta tank for treating desease, poison or radiation, kolto grants a +3 equipment bonus to treat injury roles. A specific kolto tank however, which holds 300 kg of kolto will grant a +4 equipment bonus to treat injury roles. The tank must be at least half full to have any effect on the patient inside.
