Futility Station
Lant Mining Corporation Testing Station 25452 (designated LMCTS-24542) is a failed mining survey site on the outlying regions of the Ividal Sector in the Mid Rim. Constructed at a time when LMC was rapidly expanding outside of its native Brak Sector, LMCTS-24542 represents the farthest reach of this corporation and was among a number of constructions that are considered the “last hurrah” of their expansion. Because of LMC’s desperate search for any new resources in this sector, 25452 was operated for an unreasonably long time. 25452’s staff bitterly referred to their home as “Futility Station,” a wry joke which eventually cost them their jobs when upper management found out; most staff were dismissed for “insubordinate comments that lowered company morale.” Eventually, LMC gave up and, not wanting to spend anymore time or currency on the failed venture, abandoned the station.
Futility Station stood forgotten for years until one of the former crew members crossed paths with Gram Jacobi who learned about the facility. In a desperate (but ultimately failed) attempt to keep Jacobi from killing him, this crew member spun an elaborate tale about concealed treasure hidden away by LMC to avoid increasingly high taxes imposed by the ever intrusive Republic government. Jacobi initially did not buy the story and killed the man outright, but later discovered circumstantial evidence indicating such a facility did exist. He spent several years actively searching for it and, shortly after identifying its actual location, ran afoul of the crew of Exeter when he led a boarding attempt.
Since that time, the Exeter crew has overhauled much of Futility Station, turning it into a functional staging point for their exploits.
