fter saving the town of Falcon’s Hollow from an epidemic, Zanaver, Shrizyne and Edmund journey to the nearby town of Dawnhaven to liquidate their unneeded loot. Along the way, the party is ambushed by a group of hobgoblin bandits known as the Reavers. Things go south fast as first Edmund, then Zanaver are felled, leaving only Shrizyne to face the five remaining bandits. Through nothing short of a miracle Shrizyne manages to slay the leader of the bandits and chase off the rest of the band. With Edmund dead and Zanaver badly wounded, the party decides to rest up for the night at a local bed-and-breakfast. The following day, the party arrives at Dawnhaven and learn that there is a bounty out on the heads of the Reavers. The party sell their loot, raise Edmund from the dead, hire some local mercenaries, scout out the Reaver camp and then engage the hobgoblin bandits once more in battle, this time to take a slice of sweet revenge!

Way to go Shrizyne, it’s always great when one last PC with their backs up against the wall manage to hold the line and drive off the baddies. I also love the look of that “Elven Bastard Sword” he’s wielding.
Yeah I was beginning to sweat a little on this one. I thought for sure I was going to have a TPK on my hands! I mean, everything I had thrown at them up until this point had been a walk in the park, so I thought I’d give them a bit more of a challenge…and it nearly ended in disaster. I still don’t know how Shrizyne managed to defeat the band of hob-goblins by himself. I think he rolled a crit attack on the leader of the pack, which felled him in a single blow. Then I made a morale check for the rest of the Reavers, and rolled a 1! So they fled, and disaster was narrowly averted.
HA! A crit followed by a one? Oh how I love when that happens. I can only imagine the look of relief on everybody’s faces, especially the Drow who won the day (Shrizyne is the Drow right?) and that TPK was averted. Does TPK stand for Total Party Kill?. I recently had a similar event where I realized my own party had been handling some combat rounds of mine pretty easily, so I threw my four second level PC’s up against a challenge level thirteen. Remarkably, and thanks to two crits, they too survived just as your party did.
Thanks for the comments on the artwork Dyluth, much appreciated! Yea and Shrizyne (me) was really backed into a corner there, didn’t have much choice left in the matter. He did what he had to do. With a little bit of luck, things barely managed to turn around. Oddly enough with bad rolls we kept getting (Shrizyne included) he never was hit the entire fight… and it was something to see to watch him drive off the rest after demoralizing their group by lopping off its “head”!
