Weather: Cool with heavy rain in the morning and afternoon; cold with light rain overnight. Light winds from the northwest.
Activity: The characters were roused early by Teribir and his son as they began the morning chores in the barn. After collecting their (somewhat drier) possessions and the horses, the characters moved out to the road and a discussion ensued regarding whether or not to claim the substantial bounty on Raet. Eventually, the characters agreed to split into two groups. Harlin and Lysha would continue on with the horses while Aledra and Kalas would return to the ford, take Raet’s head, and then try to catch up.
Aledra and Kalas made the ford in good time considering the weather and were pleased to find that Raet’s body was still there. More importantly, his face was intact – apparently the ravens hadn’t found him yet. They used a hatchet taken from one of the other brigands to severe his head and made a makeshift sack for it from his tunic after dunking both in the river to remove as much of the blood as possible. The walk back to Forean was likewise quick in spite of the rain. As they entered the village, the beadle expressed surprise at seeing them pass through again and curiosity at the contents of the makeshift sack. He charged them the toll (two farthings) and asked to see the contents after noticing a splotch of blood on the fabric. Reluctantly, Aledra opened the sack and revealed Raet’s head, much to the astonishment of the beadle. Once he recovered from his shock, he suggested that they see the bailiff of Forean, since presenting the head at Kolorn would only result in someone being summoned from Forean to identify Raet anyway.
The bailiff was largly uninterested in the matter, but once satisfied by the beadle that the head did belong to the brigand, instructed his chamberlain to pay the bounty to the characters on behalf of the Baron. The chamberlain did so and much to the characters’ pleasant surprise, even proved to have paid the full amount when they later counted the coin. Aledra and Kalas left Forean after a final warning by the beadle – while Raet’s clan was ashamed of him, they might still resent the mutilation of his body and it would be best if the characters passed quickly through Forean on their return trip. Aledra and Kalas managed to make Kolorn by nightfall and found a room at the only inn in town. The warm bath, food, and bed felt good after two rainy days on the road, even given the exhorbitant price of 6d paid for them.
Meanwhile, Harlin and Lysha also made good time on the road north. Their only encounter of the day was a simple peddler whose handcart had become stuck in the mud. They helped him free it and in gratitude he offered the kind young “couple” a fresh cherry pie that he’d purchased just that morning. The characters then continued on and made Ternua with the sun still in the sky. After paying the toll to cross the bridge over the River Nephen, they found the local inn and arranged stabling for the horses and a space on the common room floor for themselves. Harlin also spent some time getting to know the ostler, Master Tind al Ress.
Aledra and Kalas each earned one skill development point. Harlin spent a total of 17d, leaving only 16d of the funds provided by Master Iriel.
Weather: Cool and partly cloudy in the morning; cool with light rain in the afternoon and overnight. Light winds from the southwest.
Activity: The characters were up with the sun and made the short walk from Yalen to Jedes in good time. Master Iriel had a last few words of advice for Harlin while the apprentices readied the horses for travel and then the characters were off. The road northeast from Jedes followed the River Kald through the villages of Belgie, Deshines, and Yeashim without incident. However, as the characters approached the River Arguna ford it became apparent that the journey would not be as uneventful as they hoped. Aledra, Kalas, and Lysha all heard some bird calls on the north side of the ford as the characters began to cross; Aledra realized that the “bird” calls were not being made by birds. As Kalas moved across the ford to investigate and Lysha covered him with her bow, Aledra engaged in a little reconnaissance by throwing rocks at different clumps of bushes, eventually startling someone. Kalas threatened that particular clump of bushes with his spear and two brigands showed themselves, followed shortly by a third. A brief conversation followed in which the brigand leader and Kalas each tried to convince the other of the futility of resistance before Lysha took matters into her own hands and planted an arrow in the center of the brigand leader’s chest. Aledra sent a second arrow into his shoulder and he fell to the ground as his two underlings fled. Two other brigands hiding in another clump of bushes made to attack Kalas, but he felled the first one easily with a spear thrust to the hip and the second decided to retreat. Unfortunately for him, Lysha second bowshot of the day struck him square in the chest as well. Kalas trussed up the wounded brigand and applied a crude bandage to his hip while Aledra and Lysha checked the other two. A few items of value were recovered – mostly weapons – but both brigands were dead (or died as the two women retrieved their arrows). After a short interrogation, Kalas decided to release the surviving brigand with a curt suggestion that he consider an alternate career path and the characters then continued north, leaving the two corpses for the wolves.
The rest of the day’s journey passed quietly and the rain-soaked characters arrived in Forean as the sun was starting to set. The first group of villagers encountered were quite leery of the well-armed characters and suggested that they see the beadle in the village if they weren’t passing through. The beadle collected a toll (which Kalas remembered as legitimate from his previous trip to Tashal) and recommended a free farmer by the name of Teribir al Werl who sometimes let travelers stay in his barn. Teribir did offer the characters lodging as well as a meal and fodder for the horses; during the meal the characters learned that the brigand leader was a yeoman’s son originally from Forean named Raet who had caused enough trouble in Habimas to warrant a five shilling bounty on his head (regardless of whether or not it was still attached to his body). Perhaps fearing repercussions from the villagers or Raet’s family, Kalas was careful to not reveal that the characters had already killed him, although Lysha almost let the cat out of the bag with a comment under her breath about at least one of Raet’s “men” actually being a boy.
In the morning, the characters took their leave of Teribir. Kalas returned to the village proper briefly to speak with the beadle regarding the proper way to claim the bounty on Raet; he was told that the brigand or his head would have to be presented to the baron in the town of Kolorn or the bailiff of the hundred in the village of Habimas. Kalas then caught up to the others and a discussion regarding if, when, and how to claim the reward ensued.
Harlin’s 48d for expenses was reduced by 3d for the toll and 12d for the night at Teribir’s farm, leaving 33d. Aledra and Kalas each earned four skill development points, Harlin earned one, and Lysha earned two.
Weather: Cool with clear skies in the morning and afternoon; cold with clear skies overnight. Light winds from the northwest.
Activity: The characters met in Jedes at mid-morning as planned. They were approached on the common road by the sergeant of the keep garrison who was friendly enough once he determined that they were local folk and not mercenaries or some other sort of riff-raff. He related to Kalas that there were no positions available in the Jedes garrison, but that it would be worth Kalas’ while to check in occasionally. A trio of wagons on the common turned out to be a traveling circus that was just setting up. (Look – a trained bear!) A brief stop at the inn allowed Aledra to barter a free meal in exchange for some fresh rabbit meat for the stewpot. Kalas bought a round of drinks to quench everyone’s thirst and a brief conversation with the innkeeper revealed that aside from the circus, the only traveler currently in town was a nobleman who had left the inn a short time ago. Aledra and Kalas stopped by the hideworker’s shop to sell some rabbit hides while Harlin and Lysha wandered to Master Iriel’s stable. Once they arrived, they found the nobleman completing a transaction with the ostler. Unfortunately for Master Iriel, the nobleman insisted that the four horses he had purchased be delivered to the Baron of Zutlin just south of Tashal, something the ostler did not have time for with the Horse Fair fast approaching. After the nobleman left, Harlin chatted with the Master Iriel and secured a short employment contract for the characters. They are to collect the horses from Master Iriel tomorrow morning and deliver them to Zutlin; the ostler provided Harlin with four shillings for travel expenses and will pay the characters’ wages (12d for Harlin, 6d for each of the others) when they return with the Baron’s note for payment. The characters then returned to Yalen to overnight with the families of Aledra and Lysha.
