The masters depart
Scene 1 of The Slumbering Oracles – Skill Challenge (XP 800)
Carper’s Bay is a small, but prolific, port town. Vessels come from Cherubar or down Tonam River and stop at “The Bay” to sell their products.
The merchants of Carper’s Bay are capable explorers, adventurers, warriors and spellcasters. They have to be to make it to Ptolus and protect their wares on the way there. The world is dark and the Old Coast Road is far from secure.
The PCs are a group of youngsters trained to be bodyguards for merchant expeditions to Ptolus. Their training is almost complete, but on a sunny Queensday morning, their 2 masters – Engar and Brutus – don’t show up for training.
Scene lowdown:
- A village boy comes running with a note from the masters: “You have three weeks to find us. If you find us, your training will be complete. We are hidden in Moonsilver Forest. Be careful, not everything is at is seems in Moonsilver.”
- The PCs have to find their masters in the Forest.
What the PCs know about their masters:
- Engar is a mystic. He is smart and insightful.
- Brutus is a mercenary. He is wise and resourceful.
- Both are about 40 years old.
- Both are great warriors, and experienced adventurers.
What the PCs know about Moonsilver Forest:
- Moonsilver is infested with shadow drakes, black winged reptiles who hide in trees and fly from above, snatch their preys, and disappear.
- Moonsilver is also known for its Dire Wolves and Dire Boars – they can overpower the most experienced adventurers. Fortunately these animals are afraid of strong light and very loud, sudden noise.
- The goblins of Moonsilver are particularly deadly. Legend has it that they are under the protection of an ancient and powerful green dragon. Seeing a goblin around Moonsilver Forest – or Carper’s Bay for that matter – is always a bad omen in Moonsilver.
Additional information the PCs can know:
- History check DC 15: Engar once mentionned an old, deserted orc lair he once used to hide in Moonsilver Forest.
- Insight check DC 20: Brutus always says he hates Moonsilver – he would probably not go deep into the forest.
- Nature check DC 20: There’s a river of Black Ooze that flows from the depth of the underdark and into some parts of Moonsilver Forest. Black Ooze is an acid, murky liquid, and can burn flesh.
The Skill Challenge:
- Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Athletics
- 10 successes before 5 failures
- DC 15
- Failure: the PCs run into a lot of trouble before the scene ends
What the PCs find:
- The PCs find the orc lair – go to scene 2 of The Slumbering Oracles – Ettercap Enigma
The possible trouble:
- 2 Shadow Drakes
- 2 Charger Drakes
