John Watson is a powerful magic practitioner of the “warlock” school and a one-time member of The Party. He is infamous among mercenaries of Redhawk Arms for infiltrating the company and planting an explosive which nearly killed Captain General Rearden Jens. Using his position as a member of then-Captain Marcus Jens’ newly formed squad, he waited until The Party had been called into Rearden’s office for congratulations on their first successful contract before excusing himself from the room; the bomb concealed in his pack detonated seconds later.
Watson’s motivations for the attack are unclear, but he seems to have taken a special interest in The Party. He made a clean escape from Walsh after the explosion, but reappeared in Areen shortly thereafter, joining with Captain Palaemon of the Longrider Corps to harass The Party as they attempted to return to Walsh with Gurt Toffus; both he and Palaemon would also later participate in Xivilivix’s ambush in the Undercity of New Garen.
A devious and frustrating foe, Watson makes full use of his magical abilities in combat. He favors flight and invisibility spells to keep himself out of harm’s way as he bombards his enemies with blasts of magical energy; he also prefers to attack from ambush whenever possible, ideally after studying his opponents at length and tailoring his protective spells and attack strategies to their strengths and weaknesses. He has little stomach for a fair fight, however, and tends to retreat when the odds are no longer stacked in his favor.
