Lunx was distressed. During the journey through the desert, Blu had hardly spoken to him, and Lunx suspected he knew why.
He had probably guessed the truth, that it was indeed Lunx that had sabotaged the tower and by extension destroyed the ship, wiped out most of the coastal cities and their inhabitants, and worst of all: almost killed Blu.
That’s the reward of heroes, Lunx thought bitterly. He had heard somewhere that definition of a Hero was Someone who got other people killed, but only now did he see the truth in it.
This hadn’t been one of Lunx’s wacky pranks. He hadn’t done it for power, nor for revenge, or even for his family.
No, for the first (and given the outcome, also the last) time in his life, Lunx had acted out of concern for the larger world. Alexei was a highly dangerous man without a gods-damned ton of warpstone at his disposal. So with a gods-damned ton of warpstone, he posed a danger to pretty much everything – the fact that he seemed eager to be rid of them just reinforced Lunx’s feeling that Alexei was up to seriously bad things.
But he couldn’t explain this to his companions. They (especially Garrett) would kill him before he was even halfway through explaining, and there was no guarantee they would believe him anyway. These days, Lunx was more convincing when lying than when telling the truth.
Currently, most of the group believed that the whole thing was Alexie’s doing. There was a hint of doubt in Xiggy’s eyes, and Blu (who had been unconscious and thus spared from his lies) was all but sure of truth.
At some point, Lunx would probably try to tell his brother the truth. Hopefully he would forgive him – although this probably was one of the worse things he had done.
First things first though. This quest for relics and rituals and whatnot happened to take them to the places in the world where Lunx was most likely to find the kind of magics he needed to save himself and his family. Never again would he try to help anyone else – he was clearly not the hero type.
