Typically, characters achieve milestones by defeating creatures in combat. In this adventure, since it is in the best interests of the group to avoid combat as much as possible, so as to conserve resources, it makes more sense for milestones to be directly linked to the accomplishment of specific objectives instead. Those objectives, of course, are steps along the path to successfully completing the adventure. This does not render combat unrewarding, as combat may bring its own prizes (e.g. magic items that will prove useful in defeating The Witch), rather, it helps to avoid “punishing the group for not fighting”.
The milestones (in any order) are as follows:
- Burying the Young Farmhand Corpse with The Shovel in the earth of The Crypt and marking it as Norril.
- Burying the Well-Dressed Corpse with The Shears in the earth of The Crypt and marking it as Graham.
- Burying the Dismembered Corpse with The Cleaver in the earth of The Crypt and marking it as Xavier.
- Burying the Hairless Corpse with The Smithing Hammer in the earth of The Crypt and marking it as Vicnel.
Additionally, if one of the four suitors is buried correctly, complete with weapon and grave marker, the character placing the grave marker receives a Boon.
