Tear (pronounced: TEER) is one of the richest nations in the land. This comes in part from controlling the third largest port on the Sea of Storms behind Illian and Ebou Dar, at the mouth of the River Erinin. A great deal of Tear’s wealth comes from the oil produced on the country’s numerous olive farms. Lucrative trade in grain, fish and spices also brings money into the rich nation.
Tear’s importance stretches back to antiquity, as is evidenced by the surprisingly large number of portal stones dating from before the Age of Legends – four within its present boundaries.
The word “Tear,” when referring to the nation (or capital city of the same name), is pronounced with a long E, as if in reference to an emotional sign of grief. Its natives, the “Tairens,” however, are named with a flat A, as if referring to a rip in a piece of paper.
Tear’s distribution of wealth is highly top-heavy; the vast majority of it resides with the Tairen nobility. Tairen lords believe that commoners are actually lesser beings, and the societal rift between haves and have-nots is intense, to the point where they even dress differently. Furthermore, the inner city of the capital is surrounded by a high wall of gray stone, which protects the finer houses and palaces of the nobles, which line streets paved with stone. Outside the wall, commoners trudge through unpaved, muddy streets. Until the coming of the Dragon Reborn, it was not possible for a commoner to call a noble before a magistrate.
Tairens of all classes have an avowed fear of anything to do with the One Power. This is due partly to the fact that it is prophesied that the Stone of Tear will never fall until the Dragon has been Reborn. The High Lords like to think that by protecting Callandor, the ‘sword that is not a sword’ that resides within an inner chamber of the city’s ancient fortress, they are protecting the world from the Dragon Reborn. Currently, Tear is ruled by a King, who was selected by the Dragon Reborn and the rebel High Lords. Unlike most nations, Tear previously was not ruled by a king or queen, but rather a council of High Lords . The number of High Lords (and Ladies) has varied over time from six to twenty, as they are chosen by societal rank.
A map of the city shows the docks to be to the west of the city, and the Stone to be on the north edge. The most prominent geographical feature of the country is the vast river delta, a maze of waterways and swampland called the Fingers of the Dragon. This lies immediately to the south of the city of Tear and extends for some miles to the Sea of Storms. Tairen pilots board all foreign ships to guide them through the Fingers.
The city of Tear is dominated by the Stone of Tear, which towers above the city like a small mountain. It is believed to be mankind’s oldest surviving stronghold and indeed oldest existing structure, having been erected shortly after the Breaking of the World.
Tairen noblemen tend to wear short beards, oiled and drawn to a point. Both men and women of noble birth tend to wear mainly of embroidery and silks, while commoners dress in loose pants and wear flat-topped hats to keep the rain off of their heads. Due to the unpaved, muddy streets in the common areas, wooden clogs are worn on the feet when out of doors, and frequently are left outside the door when coming inside to keep the floors from getting too dirty. Upon leaving a common building such as an inn, it is not unusual to grab a different set of clogs, provided they still fit over one’s shoes.

He is assassinated in the street at Colavaere Saighan’s orders who wants the Sun Throne for herself.
Meralda is a member of Cha Faile. She is from Tear. She is tall and dark. She follows Faile Bashere to Ghealdan. She is sent into Bethal in disguise to plot the layout of the city.
Leuese Mulan is a trading ship merchant from Tear. In 997 NE, Leuese pulled up three heartstone bowls and a cup in his fishing nets. He didn’t know what they were until Ailhuin Guenna told him. Because of the sale of the heartstone, he owns a trading ship. Despite the lucrative prospect of heartstone, Leuese can’t remember where he found the bowls and cup.
Anaiyella Narencelona is a High Lady of Tear. She is willowy and darkly beautiful. She is one of the High Ladies sent to Cairhien. She rides with Rand al’Thor when Rand’s forces attack the invading Seanchan just outside Illian. When Rand is struck by an arrow and hits the ground, she rushes to his side with Ailil Riatin. It is unclear whether she means to help or kill Rand. Rand brings her back to Cairhien and gives her servants that are loyal to Rand and Dobraine Taborwin. She disobeys Rand’s orders and travels to Tear and is in the Stone of Tear when Rand arrives to talk to Darlin Sisnera. Rand sends her with the rest of the Tairen forces into Arad Doman. She greets Rand with King Darlin when Rand withdraws his forces from Arad Doman back into Tear. After Rand’s personal redemption, he seems to gain the ability to tell a Darkfriend by looking into their eyes. He orders all the High Lords and Ladies into a line and confirms Anaiyella and Weiramon as Darkfriends and sends them away as a warning to any others.
Istaban Novares is credited as being one of the founders of the nation of Tear. He was a nobleman of the province during the days of Artur Hawkwing. Upon Hawkwing’s death in FY 994, he formed an alliance with an equally powerful noblewoman named Yseidre Tirado and, together with their supporters, they seized control of the city and a stretch of surrounding countryside. Neither was powerful enough to declare themselves king or queen, so a ruling council was established instead. Over the course of the War of the Hundred Years, Tear overcame its enemies and expanded to its modern size, with the notion of a council of High Lords and Ladies leading the country instead of a single ruler becoming cemented in law.
Parelean was a member of Cha Faile. He was from Tear. He had a square chin. He had a beard but started shaving once he joined Cha Faile. He follows Faile Bashere to Ghealdan and seems to be one of the leaders of Cha Faile. He manages to tell Faile about Masema Dagar meeting with the Seanchan before he is killed in battle with the Shaido.
Algarin is Lord of House Pendaloan of Tear. He has a neat, pointed white beard, a wrinkled face and thinning hair. Algarin’s brother, Emarin, was able to channel but was gentled. Cadsuane was able to help Emarin survive ten years after being gentled. Rand, after cleansing saidin, comes to stay in Algarin’s house. Algarin has left for the Black Tower to become an Asha’man after being successfully tested for the ability to channel. He has joined Logain’s faction and goes by his brother’s name, Emarin.
Emarin Pandaloan was a noble of House Pendaloan of Tear. He was the younger brother to Lord Algarin. Emarin was able to channel but was found by Cadsuane and was taken to the White Tower to be gentled. Cadsuane helped him survive for ten years after being gentled.
Reimon is a young Tairen Lord and a member of the Band of the Red Hand. He is broad-shouldered with a dark beard, trimmed and oiled to a point. He chases the latest fashions almost as assiduously as he chases women, both of which come a close second to his love of gambling. He smokes a pipe. He is only foolish sometimes, though he won’t listen to commoners. He has a jovial nature and smiles and laughs a great deal.
We first encounter Reimon in the Stone of Tear as one of the young lords playing cards with Mat Cauthon. He was present when the bubble of evil caused Mat’s cards to come to life. If it weren’t for the fact that the Aiel followed the Dragon Reborn, he would want to use the Defenders to clear them out of the Stone. This is an idle boast, however. No army Tear could raise would be able to evict the Aiel. He mentions that the Atha’an Miere have docked a ship in Tear and he would like to see one of their ships – the others suggest that all he wants to look at are the Sea Folk women. He is eager at the prospect of rumors of the Dragon Reborn declaring war against Illian and of conquering the whole world in his name. Later he is part of the escort that greets Rand al’Thor when he enters Cairhien after the battle with the Shaido.
Reimon goes on to join the Band of the Red Hand and leads the Fifth Squadron, also known as “Reimon’s Eagles.” After the rapid expansion of the Band in Murandy, Reimon now leads a full Banner. As a result, Mat promotes him to Banner-General. Talmanes Delovinde gives his reasons for leaving Estean Andiama in charge of the rest of the Band as being that Reimon and Carlomin refuse to listen to the advice of a commoner. After Mat places Daerid Ondin above them, he says that they will either take orders from him or go home. Reimon laughs at Tuon’s inquiry about Mat being a Lord and says that Mat is only a Lord to them, and that is enough. When Reimon and the others meet up with Mat and his party, they bow in deep respect to the Aes Sedai with him. Tuon is shocked to see him also bow to Bethamin Zeami and Seta Zarbey. He makes a raid on a Seanchan supply camp defended by Altaran conscripts to gain much needed supplies for the Band.
Rosana is a newly raised High Lady of Tear. Her House is represented by the Hawk-and-Stars. She is lean with eyes like blue ice. She goes with Rand al’Thor when Rand tries to deal with the Illian rebels loyal to Lord Brend. Unlike other High Ladies she has a weapon that she may be able to use. Rand sends a force led by her to raise havoc on any bandits or Shaido present around Illian.
Siuan Sanche (pronounced: SWAHN SAHN-chay) is and was an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah. She was born in Tear, and grew up a fisherwoman. She was formerly the Amyrlin Seat, but was deposed by Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, stilled, and imprisoned. Her first Warder, Alric, died during the White Tower coup. She has been known to have the alias “Suki”. She is nearly a hand taller than Moiraine Damodred2 and is pretty, if not quite beautiful, with blue eyes and a delicate mouth. She is fair-skinned with dark glossy hair to her shoulders. After being Stilled, she has lost about twenty years and looks very young now.
Before she was the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan was also a very mischievous girl who had a fondness for pranks. Siuan was born in Tear of humble origin as the daughter of a fisherman but was later orphaned. She was born with the ability to Channel, and was sent to Tar Valon the same day her ability was discovered. During her early years as a novice, Siuan was found to have an earthy way of speaking to the point of almost vulgar. The Aes Sedai set to refine her language to a modicum of decency. She could not read or write when she came to Tar Valon. However, after learning, she was able to teach Novice classes on the Old Tongue. Siuan was raised to Accepted after three years as a Novice. She was present at Gitara Moroso’s foretelling. She was raised at the exact same time as her pillow-friend Moiraine. Once she was raised, it was revealed that she had a mind for puzzles and was put in charge of the Ajah’s eyes-and-ears.
In 988 NE, when the Amyrlin Marith Jaen died, and the Hall of the Tower was deadlocked between four sisters who wore the shawl for less than 50 years as the next Amyrlin. Seaine Herimon suggested Siuan be raised, noting the deaths of three consecutive Amyrlins after just a few years of service, as well as Siuan’s qualifications in administration. At the age of thirty, after wearing the shawl for just 10 years, Siuan Sanche was raised to the Amyrlin Seat, becoming the youngest Amyrlin ever at the time. During a dispute over Murandian raids into the Andoran border, Gareth Bryne is severely upbraided by Siuan when she was the Amyrlin Seat. Years later she explains why Bryne was not allowed to interfere. The White Tower had identified a young Murandy border lord named Dulain who could one day unify all of Murandy. She didn’t want Bryne’s soldiers to kill him. Unfortunately the young lord is killed a month later by an Andoran sheep farmer during a sheep raid.
Elaida had been Siuan Sanche and Moiraine’s rival since they were Accepted and once Elaida learned that Siuan had kept knowledge of the Dragon Reborn secret, Elaida decided that she must be the one to lead and control the Dragon or he would destroy the world. Using some clever politics she had Siuan legally deposed and stilled, killing her Warder Alric in the process, taking the law to its extreme. Laras, Mistress of the Kitchens in the White Tower, helped Siuan, Min Farshaw and her former Keeper, Leane Sharif escape out of the cells. Siuan only made it out of Tar Valon by lying (an ability gained by being stilled) about the whereabouts of Elayne Trakand and Egwene al’Vere to Gawyn Trakand, who lets them pass through the gates. As they leave the city, they find Logain Ablar, who joins them after Siuan offers him revenge against the Aes Sedai. Siuan now uses revenge to fill the void that was created by the loss of saidar. She is on the search now for where all the other Aes Sedai fled to when she was stilled with Min, Logain and Leane. While in the remote village of Kore Springs in Andor, she is captured by one of the villagers for damage to property. It is here that she meets Gareth Bryne, who pays for the damage in exchange for the three ladies (Logain has escaped beforehand) to work on Bryne’s property. They swear one of the most binding oaths but Siuan does not specify when she will fulfill it showing that she still tries to hold to the three oaths. Logain rescues the ladies later on and they escape to carry on with their search. After coming across an agent for the Blue Ajah eyes-and-ears, the agent reveals that the Rebel Aes Sedai are meeting in a location called Sallie Daera, which is code name for Salidar. The group arrive to then meet with the Salidar Six in which Siuan leads them into forming the “real Hall of the Tower” and to consider a new Amyrlin who will be young enough to be “guided” by the rest of the Aes Sedai. Siuan also falls back into her old role as the Blue Ajah eyes-and-ears. Gareth arrives and Siuan is forced to honor her oath and becomes his servant. She seems to hate him and always acts aggressive when talking about/to him. This could be a cover for the fact that she actually loves him. She also pretends that she and Leane hate each other and don’t talk anymore, in a move to guide and manipulate the Sitters.
Nynaeve learns how to Heal stilling, but while she is able to completely Heal Logain, it only partially works on Siuan and Leane. Siuan rejoins the Blue Ajah, though after the healing, her strength with the One Power was severely reduced, and she has relatively low standing among Aes Sedai, and must defer to those whom she once ruled. Her abilities have been reduced to the extent that she cannot even lift Gareth Bryne off the ground, despite previously having been able to lift three times her own weight. Although her pride is injured, she realizes its usefulness as other Aes Sedai overlook her and forget her substantial political abilities. The Warder bond that broke when Alric died also returned after her healing, and Siuan went through a delayed grieving process. With Egwene’s help, Siuan gave tea to the Aes Sedai holding Logain’s shield, rendering them unconscious and allowing him to escape. Currently, Siuan runs the eyes-and-ears network for Egwene al’Vere, the current Amyrlin Seat of the Salidar Aes Sedai, and is teaching Egwene about being Amyrlin.
She is also devoted to serving Egwene and leads her to where Myrelle Berengari and Nisao Dachen had been hiding Lan Mandragoran. The two ladies swear an oath of fealty to Egwene and Egwene tells them to obey Suian as they would her. Suian’s estimation of Egwene has grown significantly since this and she even mentions Egwene being a very dangerous woman. Egwene finally uncovers the fact that Siuan is in love with Gareth Bryne. Siuan is mortified and wants to keep the fact quiet. She travels with Egwene to meet with various nobles along the border of Andor and Murandy and helps Egwene develop the plan that will eventually force all the Sitters in the Hall to respect and treat Egwene as a proper Amyrlin rather than just a figurehead and she also mentors Egwene on how to be a proper Amrylin and grows to respect her. She also begins to work on her theory of the Too Young Sitters conspiracy bringing it foward for Egwene to dwell on. When Egwene decides to take over from Bodewhin Cauthon in the plan to turn the harbor chains into Cuendillar, Siuan is told by Egwene to keep quiet about it. After being captured by Elaida’s White Tower Aes Sedai, Egwene seeks Siuan out in her dreams and tells she is fine and not to come and rescue her. Siuan delivers this news to Egwene’s other advisors. Lelaine then approaches Siuan and tells her in no uncertain terms that she is to support Lelaine for Amyrlin if Egwene does die.
Siuan becomes one of Lelaine’s attendants, all the while manipulating her so that Lelaine remains at odds with Romanda. Siuan continues to meet with Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod, where she gives her the news of Halima actually being one of the Forsaken and Lelaine’s reach for power while pretending to be acting in Egwene’s name. She overhears Ashmanaille reporting about Elaida a’Roihan’s White Tower now being able to Travel. She then sends a message to Bryne to warn him about this news. She is part of the group who question Shemerin about how she escaped the White Tower. She continues to meet with Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod and pleads with her to let her be rescued but to no avail. Egwene again meets her in Tel’aran’rhiod and tells her that both Sheriam and Moria Karentanis are Black Ajah and that they should be watched. Before Egwene can say more she suddenly disappears from Tel’aran’rhiod. Siuan wakes to find the Seanchan attacking the White Tower. She gathers Bryne and Gawyn and uses the attack as an excuse to enter the White Tower to rescue Egwene. Before going Byrne agrees only to accompany Siuan if she bonds him as her Warder, which she does. After bonding, they both finally realize how much the other loves them. The group enters through the way Shemerin escaped. During the Battle of Tar Valon, Gareth Bryne, by then Siuan’s Warder, is able to prevent a Seanchan assassin from killing her. The assassin stabs Gareth with a poison needle that he does not notice, but Siuan does. She Heals him, saving his life. Siuan takes this mutual lifesaving to be fulfillment of the viewing.6 The group find an exhausted Egwene and take her back to camp. She is beside Egwene just as she is about to give Bryne and his army the signal to attack the White Tower when Andaya Forae arrives and asks Egwene to become the new Amyrlin Seat. Siuan advises her to be cautious as it may be a trap but Egwene ignores her and accepts the position. Once everyone is inside the White Tower Egwene tells Siuan to get all the rebel Aes Sedai to line up in ranks in front of the Sunset Gate in order to give an apology to the new Amyrlin Seat.
She is with Saerin Asnobar, who she has come to like, when Jimar Chubain informs them that Rand has entered the White Tower. Rand greets Siuan before entering the Hall and thanks her for taking the arrow for him all those months ago in Fal Dara.
Juilin Sandar is a thief-catcher from Tear. A native, and a Tairen thief-catcher by profession, he is dark-skinned with black hair and dark eyes, and often carries a notched sword-breaker and a slim bamboo quarterstaff.
He is hired by Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne to find the Black Ajah. Unfortunately Liandrin uses Compulsion on him and he is forced to betray the three girls. He meets Mat Cauthon outside the Stone of Tear where they agree to help each other find the three girls and free them. The plan succeeds and he is forgiven for his betrayal. In The Shadow Rising, at the order of Rand al’Thor and Lan Mandragoran he accompanies Nynaeve and Elayne when they travel to the city of Tanchico (Thom Merrilin is similarly compelled to go with them by Moiraine Damodred). After Tanchico he and Thom rescue the two girls when they are poisioned by Forkroot tea by Ronde Macura. They then join Valan Luca’s Travelling circus where he becomes a Highwire acrobat.
He remains with their party when they journey to Salidar, and again when their search for the Bowl of the Winds brings them to Ebou Dar. Aviendha, Mat Cauthon and small number of the Band of the Red Hand also accompany them. When Nynaeve, Elayne and Aviendha leave the city, Juilin stays with Mat Cauthon’s group. He later becomes besotted with one of the Seanchan da’covale, “Thera”, who is actually the ex-Panarch of Tanchico, Amathera. He is beaten when caught sneaking onto her floor, but this doesn’t stop him from seeing her. Mat gets Juilin to steal an a’dam and some damane clothing as part of his plan when trying to escape Ebou Dar with the captive Aes Sedai. Juilin leaves with Mat and takes Thera with him.
He along with the rest of the group, join and travel in Luca’s circus as a cover to escape Ebou Dar. Thera now never leaves his side. He runs to find Mat when Renna Emain stabs Egeanin Tamarath and flees Luca’s show. He is not very trusting of Egeanin, but when she is demoted from the blood, she extends the olive branch to both him and Amathera and asks them to become friends. After a skirmish with Darkfriends in Maderin Mat and the rest of his group decide to leave Luca’s show. While riding through Altara they meet up with the Band of the Red Hand and begin to travel with them. He meets with Mat, who is planning how to the approach Trustair, the next village along after Hinderstap. When the the Aes Sedai travelling with Mat finally leave, Juilin and Thera travel with them, making for Tar Valon. Mat later learns that the Aes Sedai arrived safely, and though we do not hear about Juilin, it seems safe to assume that he and Thera would have arrived in Tar Valon safely as well.
Donalo Sandomere is a Tairen Asha’man. Donalo Sandomere is a grizzled man, with the creased face of a farmer, but his grey-streaked beard is oiled and trimmed to a point, in the style of Tairen nobility. He wears a garnet in his left ear. Sandomere is in the audience when Rand addresses the Asha’man, and he participates in the battle at Dumai’s Wells . He watches Rand select the Asha’man to accompany him back to Cairhien. He is one of the Asha’man in Rand’s army in Illian. Rand notices him, and thinks he looks familiar.[verify] When the fifty-one sisters sent to the Black Tower are captured and bonded by the Asha’man, he bonds Ayako. Several Dedicated, including Androl Genhald, Canler, Donalo Sandomere, Evin Vinchova, Mezar Kurin, and Welyn Kajima meet with Logain. Donalo reports that Mishraile is receiving private lessons from Taim. Toveine doubts that Donalo Sandomere is his real name. Linked, Sandomere and Ayako weave Fire to incinerate the corpses of Trollocs and Myrddraal. They accompany Rand to his meeting with the Daughter of the Nine Moons. Ayako waits a few miles away with the Saldaeans and most of the others while Sandomere is one of the six who accompany Rand to Lady Deirdru’s manor. Afterwards, Nynaeve Heals Sandomere’s injuries. We find that he has been raised to full Asha’man status.
Weiramon Saniago is a Tairen High Lord sworn to the Dragon Reborn, Rand al’Thor. He is thin, with gray streaked hair and an oiled pointy beard. He is not short and there is something of a strutting rooster about him. He is balding. Despite being in service to Rand, Weiramon’s noble prejudices and exaggerated opinion of his own abilities make him, if not untrustworthy, at least unsuitable to take charge of matters of great importance. For example, his views on military tactics begin and end with the charge, with no room for deviation. He was sent to Cairhien as reinforcements when the city is attacked by the Shaido while gathering forces as he went. Due to Weiramon’s high rank but poor military tactics, he is sent from the battle of Cairhien to the Plains of Maredo. He is placed in charge of the massive force Rand gathered there for the attack in Illian. There he almost ruined that plan by attacking off with the cavalry and leaving the infrantry behind, once the attack on Illian began.
He goes with Rand when Rand tried to deal with the Illian rebels loyal to Lord Brend, who the forsaken Sammael was posing as. He is placed under Rand’s direct command when Rand’s forces fight the invading Seanchan army just outside Illian. He broke position to charge a group of Seanchan, allowing another group of Seanchan through to hit Rand’s position from behind. He convinced Rand to keep advancing toward Ebou Dar. He leads Charl Gedwyn, Kiril Drapaneos, Bertome Saighan and Doressin Chuliandred into the final assault against the Seanchan. Rand brings him back to Cairhien and gives him servants that are loyal to Rand and Dobraine aborwin. He is later seen conversing with Bertome in Cairhien’s corridors. Again disobeying Rand’s orders he travels to Tear and is in the Stone of Tear when Rand arrives to talk to Darlin Sisnera. He wishes to gather a sortie and send into the rebels who are laying siege to the Stone of Tear, his own countryman. The idea is squashed by Darlin. Rand sends Weiramon with the rest of the Tairen forces into Arad Doman. He greets Rand with King Darlin when Rand withdraws his forces from Arad Doman back into Tear. After Rand’s personal redemption, he seems to gain the ability to tell a Darkfriend by looking into their eyes. He orders all the High Lords and Ladies into a line and confirms Weiramon and Anaiyella as Darkfriends and sends them away as a warning to any others.
Agardo Saranche is the innkeeper of The Dragon. He is a lean man who is balding. His complection is nearly as fair as a Cairhienin. He has dark eyes. When Rand al’Thor and his company, including Cadsuane Melaidhrin, Min Farshaw, Nynaeve al’Meara and Alivia come to Tear, they rent a room at Master Saranche’s inn. When Rand only wants one room, Saranche’s thoughts go to impropriety. When Rand says that he wants the largest room, and one with a view of the Stone, Saranche says that all of his large rooms are taken and offers to escort them to The Three Moons. Cadsuane then reveals herself as Aes Sedai to force Saranche to give them a room, but well paid for by Rand.
Selame is a maid in Salidar. She is Tairen. She has a long nose and dark skin. Lelaine Akashi provides her maid Selame to serve Egwene al’Vere and report back anything she finds out. It is her job to help undress Egwene. She is murdered by Halima Saranov.
Edorion Selorna is a noble of Tear. A subtle, soft spoken man, Edorion is noted as being clean shaven, dark haired and lean, with a serious look except when smiling. He has a love for the ladies. He is playing cards with Mat when the cards become life-sized and attack Mat. He is one of the nobles who make up the majority of the officers of the Band of the Red Hand, and is noted by Mat Cauthon for possessing uncommon good sense as well as intelligence. It is clear Mat has him marked out as a man for higher command. While out looking to find help for Cairhien when the Shaido attack, he finds Rand al’Thor with the rest of the Aiel. He makes a wager with Rand that he will not make it to Cairhien to stop the Shaido in seven days. Later he is part of the escort that greets Rand al’Thor when he enters Cairhien after the battle with the Shaido. He later joins the Band of the Red Hand and travels to Murandy where King Roedran employs the Band to stay on the border. After the employment is completed, he sets off with a number of the Band’s banners and finds Mat in Altara.
Arrela Shiego is a member of Cha Faile. She is from Tear. She is tall and dark with short cut dark hair in the style of Aiel. She follows Faile Bashere to Ghealdan. She tells Faile about Masema Dagar meeting with the Seanchan before she is captured by the Shaido and made Gai’shain. With the aid of Bain and Chiad, she manages to escape the Shaido camp. She is soon recaptured by the Shaido again and is severely punished for it. She now beds Marthea, a Maiden of the Spear in the hope of finding escape. Faile and her group head to the town of Malden, to meet with Galina Casban in the hope she will help them escape. The group is betrayed by Galina and left for dead in a burnt out old house. They are rescued by Rolan and a number of those who have sworn oath’s of fealty to Faile. They are all finally rescued from the Shaido when Perrin meets up with the group, after he began his joint attack with the Seanchan against the Shaido. After the Battle of Malden she meets with Alliandre Maritha Kigarin, Faile and Lacile. The four woman hold a funeral ceremony for the Aiel men and Marthea, who protected them while they were in the Shaido camp and then ultimately murdered.
High Lord Simaan is a High Lord of Tear. He has sharp eyes and a sharp nose. He is sent with the army of Tear to restore order to Cairhien. After the battle with the Shaido in Cairhien, Simaan, along with the High Lords Aracome, Gueyam, Hearne, Maraconn and Torean, swore fealty to Rand. Later instead of taking his men to the Plains of Maredo for the battle with Illian, he commits treason by instead going to Haddon Mirk. He moves his forces to Tear, where he lays siege to the Stone of Tear. He agrees to dissolve the siege if Darlin Sisnera is made king of Tear. As punishment he has to pay the city a year for food, but is allowed to retain all his lands and titles. He greets Rand with King Darlin when Rand withdraws his forces from Arad Doman back into Tear.
Darlin Sisnera was a High Lord of Tear. He was made Steward in Tear to the Lord Dragon and is now the crowned King of Tear. Darlin is well into his middle years and not particularly handsome, although he has beautiful blue eyes. He is dark, with a pointed beard and close-cropped dark hair. He is a head shorter than Rand al’Thor.
He is first met by Matrim Cauthon as the Stone of Tear is falling to Rand al’Thor and the Aiel. He is very skilled with a sword and Mat, who defeated Galad Damodred and Gawyn Trakand with a quarterstaff is hard pressed to beat him, even though Darlin had only just recently awakened. He disappears soon after the Stone of Tear is taken and in open rebellion and treason takes his men to Haddon Mirk. He later takes all his men and joins with the Cairhienin rebellion at the Spine of the World. He meets Rand when Rand comes in secret to meet with the rebels. A Bubble of evil attacks the rebel camp and they are all forced to flee. As they are fleeing Rand is stabbed by Padan Fain with the Shadar Logoth dagger. Darlin carries Rand to safety and seems to have changed his opinion of Rand. He seems to be trying to court Caraline Damodred. Cadsuane Melaidhrin takes Darlin under her protection and keeps him in Lady Arilyn’s palace in Cairhien.
After his release, he returns to Tear, where Rand makes him Steward. A number of High Lords lay siege to the Stone of Tear and only agree to disperse if Darlin is made the King of Tear. Rand agrees to this. Darlin then asks for Caraline to marry him, which she doesn’t answer. Min Farshaw gives him some advice as to what the crown he will wear could look like. Rand then asks Darlin to organize all troops available in Tear, where he will have the Asha’man transport them to Arad Doman. He greets Rand when Rand withdraws his forces from Arad Doman back into Tear. Rand informs Darlin that his troops will now be moving toward Shayol Ghul. Rand asks Darlin to gather all the High Lords and Ladies of Tear into a line. Once gathered, Rand looks into every one of their eyes and discovers that Weiramon Saniago and Anaiyella Narencelona are Darkfriends and orders them to leave. He then informs Darlin to marshal all his forces and get them ready to march to the Field of Merrilor.
Tedosian is a High Lord of Tear. Lady Alteima is his wife. He is described as having a thick body. High Lord Tedosian is first mentioned when Thom forges a note from High Lord Carleon to Lady Alteima with the intention that the note be found by High Lord Tedosian. His first appearance is at a meeting with Rand along with other High Lords. He kills Carleon in a “hunting accident”. Later his wife poisons him and now is the only one who will feed him and look after him, keeping him in his sickbed. His wife is sent with the Army of Tear to Cairhien, and while she is away, he is to recover in the High Lady Estanda’s apartments. Later in open rebillion and treason he goes to hide out in Haddon Mirk. He is convinced to do this by Sebban Balwer’s agents, who in turn is working for Pedron Niall.
Rodrivar Tihera is the Captain of the Defenders of the Stone. He is lean and dark with a sharply pointed beard. He joins Rand al’Thor’s forces just outside Illian to fight the invading Seanchan army. He is quite often the leader of Rand’s bodyguards. He spreads the Defenders out on Rand’s flanks in the final assault on the Seanchan.
Yseidre Tirado is credited as being one of the founders of the nation of Tear. Yseidre Tirado was a noble lady of the province during the days of Artur Hawkwing. Upon Hawkwing’s death in FY 994, she formed an alliance with an equally powerful nobleman named Istaban Novares and, together with their supporters, they seized control of the city and a stretch of surrounding countryside.
Tolmeran is a High Lord from Tear. He is lean with an iron gray beard. He is one of the High Lords under the command of Weiramon. He is sent to the Plains of Maredo where Rand al’Thor is gathering a massive army for the imminent attack on Illian. He goes with Rand when Rand tries to deal with the Illian rebels loyal to Lord Brend. Rand al’Thor sends a force lead by him south of Illian to keep any hostile forces at bay. He leaves with his forces from Illian to return to Tear, against Rand’s wishes.
Mara Tomanes is the name of a girlhood friend of Siuan Sanche. During her escape from Tar Valon after being deposed, Siuan told Gawyn that Elayne and Egwene were studying in Illian with an Aes Sedai of that name. This is the first example of Aes Sedai being able to lie when the Three Oaths are removed because of being stilled.
Sareitha Tomares was an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah. Sareitha was a dark Tairen with brown eyes and a square face. She was still too new to the shawl to look ageless. She had a single Warder, Ned Yarman.
She was allied with the Salidar Aes Sedai. She was sent to Ebou Dar as part of the embassy from Salidar to Tylin Quintara Mitsobar, the Queen of Altara. While inside to Tarasin Palace in Ebou Dar, she faces off against the White Tower embassy as to whether Matrim Cauthon should be returned to the White Tower. When Elayne Trakand discovers the secret of the Kin, Sareitha acts as the Seat of Rebuke in Merilille Ceandevins trial against Elayne. She Travels with the the rest of the group lead by Nynaeve al’Meara and Elayne from Ebou Dar to the Kin’s farm with the Bowl of the Winds. She then journeys to Andor with the rest of the group.
She moves through the city with Elayne Trakand, when she is out in Caemlyn greeting the people. She is the only Aes Sedai who thinks that Doilin Mellar acted as a hero by rescuing Lord Luan’s men, even though Luan had not yet declared his support for Elayne Trakand. Perhaps this reflects her relative youth when compared with the other Aes Sedai. In the Blue Reception Room in the Caemlyn Palace, Sareitha and Careane Fransi threaten the mercenary captains present about the power of the White Tower. Sareitha was killed by Chesmal Emry in Caemlyn when Elayne and the other Aes Sedai discovered them at Lady Shiaine’s house on Full Moon Street.
Salita Toranes is an Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah. Salita is a dark-skinnedTairen, almost as dark as one of the Sea Folk.2 She has a round face and cool eyes. She is plump. She is known for her love of clothes, allegedly emptying her trunk every morning to find the perfect outfit, such as a yellow-slashed green dress embroidered with yellow scrollwork on the bosom. She is from Tear and still receives money from her estate, though she was raised in Salidar. She has only worn the shawl thirty five-years and is very young to be a sitter. Following the White Tower split, Salita has allied herself with the Salidar Aes Sedai and has been elected as a Sitter for the Salidar Hall; as a Sitter, she was jointly responsible for electing Egwene al’Vere as Amyrlin.
At the War Vote, Salita stands voting positively.1 Later, when the report on events at Shadar Logoth is delivered to the Sitters, she and Romanda arrive early to hear it. Salita again votes positively on an alliance with the Black Tower. She is one of the spectators to watch the process of Cuendillar be made by Kairen Stang and Ashmanaille. At Lelaine Akashi’s emergency meeting of the Hall, she stands to accept the offer from the Dragon Reborn of bonding forty-seven Asha’man.
