Far beyond the shores of Vordil, the exotic lands of Zhōngguó lay in constant darkness. This was not always so. Once, Zhōngguó was a propersous land lead by an Emperor-God Child and shield by the Phoenix. Rocky shores with high shelves protected it from invasion by foreign powers. Lush fauna spread over its groves and cliffsides. Its samurai caste guarded its borders from all intrusion by outsiders. The monks an shrines maidens were the spiritual leaders, spreading the glory of the Emperor-God Child. The kingdom’s architecture was both beautiful and strange to behold, using vibrant colors and assymetrical, mutli-tiered rooftops. Its streets were lite by magical paper lanterns, maintained by a caste of working-class wu jen and priests. Their alchemists and wu jen (sorcerers) had made remarkable advances in both magic and science, mastering the creation of black poweder. A strict caste system ment that everyone knew their role and duties they must perform for the glory of the Emperor-God Child. The castes included undesirables, peasants, the priesthood, the samurai, and the nobles. When the Phoenix’s egg was stolen, it fled Zhōngguó to reclaim its lost heirloom and Zhōngguó was cast in turmoil. Since then, the once peaceful lands are now covered in shadow and overrun by oni.
