A new tactic campaign-wise. Randomizing just one space sector with dice is a lot of work, so, I’ve dug out some code I was working on a couple of years ago that does it for me. It was about 90% done at the time, so I’m going to take some time finishing up that. I’ve also decided I’m going to base things on existing Traveller star maps (I’ll just 3D them for more fun).
I have the first part of the first adventure read, and I’m also almost done reading the character reation guide, so I’ll have a better feel on what types of characters will be good. I’ve never GMed a sci fi game before, so lots of fun!!!!
Mr. Culhwch I have been scouring the internet for a place to purchase a copy of Traveller Hero. I’m hoping you can point me towards a resource where I might be able to obtain a copy of this tomb. It seems as elusive as Abdul Alhazred’s Original Necronomicon.
I’m slowly getting things off the sheets and onto the wiki. I’m at the point where I need to start generating more systems! I’m planning on bringing everything with me to MN (inluding dice). I should have a bit of time to work on stuff there.
I’m evaluating some software to map out star sectors. Found a really nice freeware app that let’s me map the stars, rotate the sector, and gives me the distance between stars. Downside is there’s no way to save planetary data in that app.
Looked at a pay app last night. I was very impressed. I can randomly generate everything or just certain aspects. I can get various views, so I can see things, like, seeing where the moons will be on a planet, etc. I can also print out 2d maps of the sector Downside is I can’t get a report getting distances between stars. No easy way to tack sectors together to get a full view of your territory. Also, not sure it’s worth the price they’re asking.
I’ll be evaluating a few more apps before making a decision.
More wiki pages are up. Mostly skeleton info at this point. I’ll flesh it out when I get the chance (all the info is done for the first star system, and is on paper. I just don’t have that data with me atm).
Bill, on the Hero Games forums, read through the Star Hero forum specifically. Or do a search for Traveller Hero. I did purchase a pdf of Hero Games Sidekick, which is a stripped down version of the game system. If there’s an instructor’s meeting tonight, I’ll try to bring in a CD of it to get you started. I’ll probably add a few more of the optional rules that aren’t included with Sidekick, but it should at least get you a good understanding of the rules.
Keep up the good work, Jeff. Looking forward to playing! Wish I could figure out how to join your Ob Portal. Is reading through the Hero site going to help to understand the rules? I didn’t see a “Traveler” site there.
I am currently about 1/3 of the way through Star Hero. I’m in the section on designing alien species to be exact. As Traveller has a bunch of species already designed, I probably won’t pay too much attention to this section. I paid a lot of attention to star sector/star system/planets design section. I didn’t like Traveller Hero’s star sector design section (a flat map with each hex being a parsec in length and a 50% change of each hex containing a star system; way to populace for a flat map).
The first star sector has the location of it’s stars mapped out. I am now going star by star generating the type of star and the planets orbiting it. This is slow going as I haven’t even finished the first star system yet (a binary star system).
I’m currently finishing reading the Urban Fantasy Hero genre book. After that I’m planning on reading Star Hero. I skimmed it years ago when I first bought it, but I need to read it thoroughly to get a handle on sci-fi gaming. The Traveller Hero books are in my possession…I’ve skimmed through and will read thoroughly once I’m done with Star Hero.
