Beyond The Frontier

The Widening Gyre

Stane World wiki, scroll down for Starport map

The landing pad begins to come back to life again after the incident at the Dust Witch, crews refueling their ships from underground lines, cargo bots loading and unloading containers, oblivious to the descending madness. The Witch’s Crew draws a few dirty looks from passersby, their labors disturbed by the Marine action; some catch a glance at Sialann’s Force Pistol and stop and stare for a second. No more so that the sounds of mortar fire in the distance and the distant rumble of heavy artillery in the city. Two mercs walking between containerized cargo, suddenly yell:

“Everybody Get Down!”

As a mortar shell rips a hole in a container, flinging out splinters of burning metal that make a deadly wheet as it flies through the air across the LZ, plinking into ships and other containers.

“Frell no! That was inside the perimeter!”

One exclaims as they run off, maybe to try to deal with the insurgent mortar, or maybe to find better cover. The crew sees markings on the tarmac towards the monorail, the surest way towards building B. Following them along they reach an open area, where a Stane militia officer has gathered various cargo and customs bots into an ad hoc squad, armed with PGMP-12’s, where as he is walking inspection, one of the ‘bots accidentally fires it’s weapon, decapitating another ’bot.

“Stop that ’bot!” The officer screams, curled up in fear on the pavement.

The other ‘bots respond instantly, destroying the offending bot, obviously base defense here is more hazardous than the enemy. Passing through the cluster frak, the crew sees the monorail arrive, some with cargo to be unloaded or loaded on flatbed cars, otherwise passengers get on and off the passenger cars. Suddenly a wild grav cycle shoots in a deadly arc up from behind the berm, people get back, with cries of "They’re gonna crash!" But the bike brakes just in time to drop a passenger off, before spinning on its invisible cloud and a full tilt lev back towards from where it came from. The passenger, if shaken, doesn’t let it show, but maybe she grew a few more grey hairs from the ride; Jaq’s back.

I’ve got clearance papers from the Imperials, but the situation here is pretty frelled. Frelled worse than just what you see here.” She gestures around the downport. “Local SDF might not put too much stock in this paperwork. So I suggest we unload and kick dust as rapidly as we can. Inless someone can put together a deal before we get the current cargo unloaded, I suggest we grab a load of sailboat fuel and get back into the black.”

Garet whispers back to Sialann: “See how good we are?” Hearing Jaq’s comment, Garet simply smiles and says laughing: “Why is it scouts always think everyone else is doomed, unless they’re nearby to save the day?” “Myself, Torq and Kallen have been on this rock enough, it’s dishonest, just not this dishonest.”
“All they wanted was their payoff, the SDF could possibly care less about that body.”
Asking for the clearance papers from Jaq, and tucking them into the inner layer of his combat armor, When Jaq mentions that the situation is worse than we see here, Garet looks directly at her: “Then you need to tell us exactly how bad things are. We need to know just how quickly we need to refuel, resupply and get out of here.”
“Unless we have no choice, we’re not flying empty. So, change of plans. Torq, I don’t know if the economy here has cratered or not, but give Jaq a list of the things we absolutely need to kick off this rock, and where she might find them. Have them charge it to Irulan. Walt, you go with Jaq.”
“Torq, you’re on cargo duty. work your magic, see what you can scare up, take Kallen with you.”
“Myself and Sialann will head to Irulan’s factor, contact Doc Roxboro, then start seeing about unloading and refueling. Who knows how long that’ll take.”
“Everyone’s on comm, if things start going downhill, sing out what you’re seeing, then get back to the ship.”

Turning to Jaq, “Highness, we need a mechanics tool kit, a starship engineer tool set, a medikit and at least one ton of ship’s spares. That’s going to cost about twenty grand normally.”

Torq leaves to hunt for freight, mail, passengers and spec cargo.

[ooc: yes, it is crb. At this point, I am having everyone going to ITH’s factor, because too much of splitting things up becomes too disjointed to run (unless we are talking really short side runs like Jaq at the Imperial HQ), that is where Torq would look for cargo anyways.]

Everyone boards the monorail for building B, it is not the shortest trip, the monorail (which while having some bullet holes, is operating smoothly) stops at LZ’s 8, 9 & 10 to load and unload. Behind the berm the party can see further lots for parking, cargo and such; this side of the starport hasn’t seen much destruction. The monorail enters building B and opens to a platform where the party can see platform security is being done by the same mix of mercenaries and Stane Army. There is a sense of urgency in the crowd as they move through the walkways of the warehouse, taking time to glance through doors opening to different spaces, many offices are empty. While the robot cargo handlers in the warehouses are going about their functions normally, the warehouses are emptier than usual as well.

Once the party reaches the ITH office, they can see the factor Itsebroz Atleprinzh and his assistants there getting ready to clear out. His eyes alight as he sees the Witch’s Crew:

“Ah, my hijacker’s are here!” He says with a laugh, alluding to that he has heard of what just recently occured. After finding that the Witch has freight for Dr Roxboro, a doctor working in the refugee camps as a charitable act, he will call Roxboro, while before dialing, shaking his head and muttering “Feeding the rebels, tsk”.

The ship’s spares and standard medikit they have there, Itsebroz has them loaded on a grav pallet in a to be sent to the ship, no charge (who knows what will be left if the rebels win). The tool kits will have to be bought, separately, about cargo, he says Torq is welcome to use the terminal there in the office. However, he also knows of a lucrative deal with a Stane Army Quartermaster selling weapons from his warehouse, he can give them a introduction file on a hand comp and an address to find him (it is in a whorehouse on the worst side of startown); weapons are a highly sought item, especially for the non-industrialized worlds.

Torq raises an eyebrow, gun running is something he understands, but he also knows how it could go wrong with a new crew, “Sound’s like my part of town, maybe they’ll give us a good price for the princess there. Let’s get rid of this freight first and then see who is offering what.”

Jaq tilts her head in a manner that says she thinks Garet is not thinking clearly at his suggestion that she go find the equipment they need instead of going to Starport HQ. She beams him a copy of the papers to his comm and momentarily follows it up with a statement to that effect. “Garet, the paperwork was issued from the Imperial military to me as an Imperial agent. I suggest that when we get to that point, that the two of us go together to the Starport HQ to discuss getting off this rock.” She turns to Torq, “As far as the Mechanic’s and Sharship Engineer’s tool kits, I don’t anticipate that being a real problem. Provided there is a supply here that hasn’t been destroyed by the rebel assault. If need be, I can take care of that.”

When she overhears the part about gun running, she turns to Garet and Torq and says, “I have nothing against any kind of business, but I’d like not to hang around here too long. So whatever we are going to do, we should do it with minimal delay.”

Jaq leaves all the conversations with Itsebroz to Garet and Torq, as they are familiar with each other, instead, concentrating on just the business end. “Who is your best suggestion to get the toolkits from?” is about all she says.

When she gets a chance to get Garet alone, she’ll say, “G, the Imp Colonel I spoke with is fully expecting the Black Ships to head this way. Dr Misishii was here yesterday and there was something about the Android, Eve, that was also on the UTREE expedition. I don’t want to say anything in front of the others, you understand. As an aside to Jaq, “I nearly forgot, can you try and get us a security/3 anti-intrusion program, or at least as good as you can get. That’ll be about twenty grand, or just one grand for Security/2, but means we should be safe from average hackers and jackers.”

Talking to the group again, “If Queeny can handle that we’ll be safe to get passengers, until then I think we should hold back. Also, maybe I should arrange the fee as our captain is a bit too generous with tickets. Low passage isn’t worth taking, not enough money in it for so few berths and we might need the berths for ourselves if say the gun deal goes south. Some street armour, too – I can’t be walking round in a vacc suit the whole time we’re planetside. And a longarm, both my weapons are pistols – hanging round with you fellers seems like it might be interesting more often than not and it would be nice to know I can help keep any threats at long range, where they belong. That would do for starters.”

Garet’s first comments to Jaq: "Jackie, I know your names all over that flight authorization, and you’ll have to be there at the ‘ports office before we can fly, I get that. But priority first is getting this cargo off, getting as much equipment as we can, stuffing the witch full of fuel, food and water, and dusting. The fastest way to do that is division of resources. Torq’s good at “acquiring” cargo."

Although at hearing the possibly of gunrunning, Garet visibly cringes.

“Well, let’s see what we can get. Turning to Torq, I’m in for 200K. Then turning back to the crew, Garet explains as best he can: we get paid for cargo, of course, but how freighter crews get wealthy is speculative, or “spec” cargo."

“I could sit here all day and explain it, but basically spec works roughly along these lines:

  1. We find the goods.
  2. We find out the type of goods, and how much.
  3. We pay for the goods.
  4. Depending on where we head, and what the need is there, we either sell the goods, or hold on to them and find a better planet where we can sell at a higher profit."

“So, if you’re interested, you chip in funds. the more you chip in, the more cargo we can buy, as well as the more profitable cargo we can purchase.”
“Kallen, Walt, Jaq. you all have a bundle in your packs. The fee you all received from the expedition, minus our pirate friends fee, divided by 4.”

(If they do, Torq, add their contribution to the 466K)
“Sialann, here, use my personal cred stik, unless you want to come back to the ship. Since Jaq is heading into the Entertainment district, either myself or Torq can point you towards shops for you to get clothing and gear.”

Finances need to be dealt with though, personal and ship; cargos, passengers, gear and personal items. Going to the entertainment complex must be done by something other than the monorail.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it, lol]

[By the way, if we’re using a base size, let’s say for arguments sake, the height and width of an American dollar bill, and like Dragoner mentioned, the Terrelay funds were in all 100 denominations, then what we received, if stacked would be 12" wide (2 × 6″), 12.5" deep (5 × 2.5″) and 4.3" high (10 × .43″). That’s 1,000,000 dollars. That can be placed in a backpack or a deep briefcase.]

Garet to Torq: “Roger that. Since you’re waiting for Roxboro to get here, I’ll turn and burn.”
To Jaq and Sialann: “When we get back to the ‘Witch, grab your backpacks, I’ll give you cash to pay for the kits and Sialann, I’ll give you your split from the expedition. You can kick in if you’re interested for the cargo, otherwise the cash is yours, same goes for you, Walt.”

The Witch has an air/raft. Also at this point everyone is back at the Witch, the medikit and spares are there as well; Torq should roll to see if the chit Itsebroz gave him for the fuel and LS works.

Especially if the port authorities have already done a shakedown, right, G?” She turns to Garet to see if he agrees, but continues, anyway. “The cash we have, we came by fairly. Still, it is a chunk of cash given to a doomed expedition and there might be questions about how we came by it, especially if there isn’t anybody left to tell the Republic that it was all on the up and up. We don’t really have time here to do a lot of washing, so to speak, but I think we need to consider how much we are going to use here. A big amount here will show up on somebody’s radar screen somewhere and we may eventually be called to answer for it. However, there is something to be said of dumping it all in here once and for all and not having it trail after us for months through one jump and then the next, too.” She pauses, looking around at faces that quite likely now look at her as a party pooper. “All I am saying is we should make an informed decision and if we choose to carry this cash elsewhere, that we be prepared to put it through the wash somewhere.”

Once the grain is unloaded he’ll make sure the loading ramp is closed and the ship is secure once again.

There is also the single shot Martini-Henry style rifle taken from the pirates, I’ll call loading it a minor action:

Nice. Roxboro is a man on a mission, he has help of some local drivers, and knows how to gather help from the automated longshore’bots in the chaotic atmosphere of the landing pad, only pausing to duck from an errant sniper’s bullet every once in a while.

Nice work Jaq; yes, I guess she can fly the air/raft to the entertainment complex as well.

Kallen finds in the ship’s locker, a bandolier that has 21 bullets in it (but holds forty) and four boxes of cartridges with 20 rounds a piece in them; he still needs to price his other gear such as a flak vest and whatever else he wants.

It is base price 20,000, just as Torq says; there will be some adjustments to prices, but I want all the shopping done at once. Also, there should be a list of who is on the shopping trip.

We will need ship spares, think Torq mentioned that, at least 1ton, maybe 2tons or even 3tons would be a good idea in case we get in space combat. I can’t recall if ITH were giving us some spares, there was some talk, but we just ended up with fuel & LS. Anyway, they were not on Jaq’s list and they’re pretty vital to staying alive in space if we get in a fight.

I will need the final expenses numbers (with ships spares) before I can run spec cargo as we could easily spend 50 or 60+kcr.

Current balance prior to expenses, but including a 2k salary each for the month is Cr.609,000, a tidy sum for spec cargo! I assume the Dust Witch had no berthing fees on Stane.

Dust Witch now owes Cr.585,000 to some of it’s crew.

Yes, you have some spares, slugs for the 3D printer, etc.; plus the medkit (TL14) iirc. I’ll let you use the Ship’s Locker as a “magic box” to some degree (don’t let it go to anybody’s head) if enough care is taken, and money spent, to stock it. We are still waiting on Sialann’s purchases and a list of who is out shopping at the entertainment center.

will have to locate my books to look prices up …

i remember there was another type of armour in the CRB, if gel cloth’s not available – something about plastic inserts. i think it was bulky at low techs, but better than plain cloth.

ammo – DSAP, HEAP, sthg nice & crunchy. need to look those up, too.

GL ammo – sthg that goes FsssSHHH! and then BOOM!!

anyway, will go look up prices & types … might be tonight, tho, sorry, gotta get ready for work.

Maybe Sialann can hit the beauty parlor as well to doll up for the steward gig:

See what you can do, anyone else who knows prices should jump in as well. Saw Gel in the Darrians module:

Gel Suit (TL10): Primarily used for recreation such as vehicle
racing or contact sports, the gel suit is a skin tight body glove,
similar to a wetsuit. It comprises of reactive gel sandwiched
between two layers of ballistic cloth. Violent impacts cause
the gel to solidify, distributing the force of the blow across a
wider surface area. Although the suit permits full mobility, it
momentarily hardens when blocking damage, reducing the
wearer’s Initiative by one for each separate attack it blocks in a
round. Cost includes separate gloves and hood.

Racy. Cost 30,000 AV 6 for somewhere around this, you can get Stane Poly Carapace with better protection.

It looks like you have enough cash to fill the cargo hold, regardless. Depending on where you are going and what you are selling, with a turn over time, but I am probably over thinking this. I do want everyone to take time to look at their purchase lists, and record them in their gear, to be finished with this; then it will be either someone has something or they don’t. At this point, I am assuming only Jaq, Kallen and Sialann have gone shopping?

Roxboro is finishing loading the grain on his trucks and trailers combos, when he is finished he will thank the crew and thank Irulan, then prepare to leave.

Jaq, Kallen and Sialann would have gone shopping because Torq would’ve been purchasing spec cargo, and Garet and Walt are moving the Airship to the grav/heliport to attempt to sell. So can we give the three of them our lists?

[OOC: thank you for reminding me] Garet wants to look into buying both a ship’s cat and possibly two mongoose, along with care tapes, bedding, cages, and food for at least 4 months. he wanted to go himself so he could find pets that fit his temperament and personality, but if it’s easier, I’ll generate a list and give it to Sialann.

Sialann, zipped up in her CombatEnviroSuit, gauss pistol strapped to one hip, force pistol strapped to the other, and with Garet’s credstik burning a hole ion her pocket, heads out with the Jaq and Kallen (and Torq?) in the air/raft to the complex.

She lets out the occasional low whistle as she rubbernecks the damage caused by the firefight, and the sight of bodies being tagged and bagged, but doesn’t flinch as the occasional spent round whistles past. She was blooded long decades past, and combat is not what frightens her.

As they overfly the mopping-up operation, she instead assesses the rebels’ efforts with a detached mind, and quietly approves of their dogged spirit. That’s exactly the kind of backbone these people will need when the beasts come, she thinks.

She swaps some small talk with Kallen (and Torq?) on the short flight; they haven’t had much occasion to confer to this point, and she wants to know more about those she is now journeying with. On the most part though, her thoughts are on the equipment she needs. She is sick at the wound to her pride that has come from wearing cast-offs and carrying other people’s gear.

And as she has this thought, she realises the change it signifies – she has not felt pride in herself in a long time. Too long forced to live like an animal, like a slave!

Kallen talks about how good a drinker Garet is, a good chum and very handy in any ship being very experienced in so many areas of the ship. Torq the old dog he exclaims, hard headed but soft on the inside. The talks a little of Irulan, one of the best cargo runners in his time.
Talking with Kallen like this gives you a sense he loves life and wouldn’t hurt innocent people.

Flak Jacket TL8 – 300Cr
Two long bulky looking, thick coats – budget of 100Cr
Personal comforts (shaving creme, shavers, mens tolietry) – Budget of 50Cr

Torq will go shopping if the others can wait for him to check the trade terminal first. Otherwise he’ll check it when he gets back.

On February 22, 2013 at 03:10 PM dragoner said:

Sounds good..wait a minute..Garet will use his intelligence to perform a risk assessment. Re-assembling, and getting fuel and filling the gasbag of the airship isn’t a problem, Garet just wants to make sure he and Walt are not shot down by some trigger happy ground jock who has no idea what an airship is!
__
If he feels the risk is minimal, he and Walt will assemble the airship (who knows? a great opportunity to promote the product), heat the airbag, fuel the engine and take the airship to the entertainment district, where Walt and I (Garet will comm Torq to ask if he wants me to buy his gear or will we get it himself), will purchase our personal gear, then notify Jaq of our plan.

Walt does seem to think that flying it around the starport, no radio, no sort of transponder or beacon at all would be dangerous, confirming Garet’s suspicions. However, the airship could be either driven very close to the ground, or loaded deflated on the monorail, taking to landing pad one and then taken over to the heliport from there.

Torq is at the shopping district, though to figure cargos, he could either be looking physically at other landing zones or going to warehouses; the terminal is back at ITH’s factors office and they are gone by now, the terminal probably is still there, but the link would most likely be dead.
