The fifth great war of Aelthion never ended. The struggle for power and ultimate rule over the Empire washed over the land as two princes vied for dominance. Once begun, civilization shuddered as neighbor took up arms against neighbor, and brother slaughtered brother. The battle cries of the great armies continued until they simply reverberated into the annals of history, leaving behind them a desolate wasteland of poverty and degradation. No law. No hope.

Then they came — the hordes of hunger. The cursed ones. A legion of damned souls breeding from the corpses of the desolate fallen, and feeding on the living. Near mindless and countless in numbers, without recollection of their former mortal lives. These bloodthirsty creatures stalk the night hunting warm blood. Each of them wields the strength of ten men, a veracious, unending hunger, and cunning equal that of the most dangerous predator. Only the strong and those they protect survive, but all fear the growing plague of the vampyre.

This particular legend begins not in the throws of that great battle, not in the midst of a civil war, but rather in the ever more difficult struggle to survive. Fifty years after the collapse of the Aelthion Empire – five decades after the beginning of the vampyre plague – society has recoiled into sparse, isolated clusters of survivors.

Finding safety in numbers, those who were lucky enough to survive the early years of The Fall eventually gathered to establish new cities. They united in defense of one another and forged new alliances.

With a common, overwhelming enemy, the various factions and races of the lands have, for the most part, set aside petty differences to come together in the pursuit of a future; a future where they may prosper and their children may grow strong to further carry the waning torch of civilization.

Our heroes are just such survivors. Though each has their own story, and each egresses from a different background, they have managed to make their way to one of the few northern survivor cities, the bastion of Northshore Landing on the isle of Alvison’s Haven

“The Fifth War” is the long-term Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 campaign I am currently running. It’s a dark fantasy adventure based in a post-apocalyptic setting. It will be unique merging of themes from several different genre into a fantasy setting. The game will run once, or perhaps occasionally twice, per month (never during consecutive weeks). Game nights will likely be on Saturdays. If you are an experienced gamer in the Hopkinsville, Kentucky area and wish to participate, please let me know. There is current potential to work new characters into the storyline. — Justin Mason
