So, here we are. Hi, how ya doin’? Me, not bad, not bad at all. Since this is the beginning of a long conversation (hopefully), I figure I should say something about myself.
Once upon a time, around two decades ago (really, it’s been almost 20 years, sheesh), in a dreary, cursed land called High School, I got invited to play a little game in a red box. “Dungeons and Dragons,” say I, “wasn’t that a Saturday morning cartoon?” (which I watched and liked) I can’t remember if I played the fighter class or if I played the elf class, but I do know that it was a lot of fun. The sword and sorcery fantasy, the multi-sided dice and the convoluted rules it was like being inducted into some arcane order. But what I dug the most was the storytelling, sharing stories with friends.
The red box gave way to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (2nd Edition). Then I flirted with a variant world, called Ravenloft, which tickled my horror bone. I loved the setting, but never felt quite at home there. The fantasy games were added to by mutant action “TMNT and other strangeness,” and the spy game, “Top Secret,” and the comic book world of “Marvel Superheroes.” They were fun divergences, but it always came back to D&D.
Players came and went, but I’ve been lucky enough to call some long term gamers as friends, one of which helped introduce me to gaming way back in the beginning. My current troupe has been together for about 13 or 14 years. We’ve pretty much stuck with D&D, though AD&D gave way to 3.0, and then to 3.5 (and then 4.0, jeez I gotta by more books).
My sister sent me this thin paperback first edition of a little known game called “Vampire: the Masquerade.” I read the book and fell in love all over again. Though D&D could be used for hardcore storytelling, it was still seemed to focus more on mechanics, how to kill and loot and become more powerful to kill more, to loot more, etc. etc. The White Wolf games actively pushed the storytelling part, emphasizing role-playing over roll-playing.
First and second editions of the White Wolf games came and went. My troupe and I played Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling, Exalted, and bastardized conglomerations of all of them. However, much like my old flitations with Ravenloft, none of these stories really lasted.
Currently, I have a D&D adventure, called Haven: the rise of Acirema, which has been going on so long that it would be a pain in the a$$ to try and post here (the party started at 1st level and they’re all about 11th now). But about two years ago, I gave Werewolf: the Forsaken a go. And that’s what I’ll be posting here.
As to why I’m posting here…well, one of my friends found this website and posted her adventure, “The Weight of Rubies.” Then some of my other friends posted their adventures. So, like the good sheep that I am, I gave into peer pressure.
Baa…baaaa
