The Era of Bloodshed

Prelude To Darkness

D&D (3.5)

There are several unique abilities and techniques that ninja posess within the shinobi world. Many of these unique abilites come from inheritance through bloodlines, or extensive training in a unique skill. Below is a list of the many different traits that you too may have been born with. (Depending on your roll) These abilities are in addition to the normal bonuses a PC attains from their normal class features.

Kekkei Genkai (血継限界, Kekkei Genkai? "Bloodline Limit") are abilities passed down genetically in specific clans. Most clans have developed special jutsu related to their kekkei genkai and their related jutsu cannot be taught or copied by others, as they require the specific genetic trait to work. Kekkei genkai abilities that work via the user's eye are called "pupil, or ocular, techniques" (瞳術, dōjutsu?), such as the Byakugan & Sharingan.

Summons are typically called forth in a puff of smoke with the Summoning Technique (口寄せの術 Kuchiyose no Jutsu?, Viz "Shinobi Conjuration", English TV: "Summoning Jutsu"), or any number of variations thereof. Before a summoning can be performed, the user signs a contract with their own blood, each contract differing depending on what creature is to be summoned. Once this is done, the summoner need only perform the proper hand seals and offer a few additional drops of blood with the same hand they signed the contract with to perform the summon. The amount of chakra offered at this time is directly proportionate to the size of the summoned creature. Summons have their own abilities that they can use by themselves or in conjunction with the summoner. Some summons are so powerful that they may even challenge the summoner, or will demand something in order to contribute to the battle.

In certain cases, it is also possible to summon inanimate objects such as large spiritual gates to protect the user from powerful attacks. Both summoning types require a blood sacrifice.

The Byakugan (白眼? literally "White Eye," English manga "Evil Eye") is an eye technique (瞳術 dōjutsu?) that naturally occurs in members of the Hyuga clan. Byakugan possessors are characterized by their lavender, pupil-less eyes. When the Byakugan is activated, their pupils somewhat appear and the veins near their temples bulge. Possessors of the Byakugan are also capable of using the Gentle Fist style of combat.

A person with the Byakugan has a nearly 360 degree field of vision, except for a small blind spot at the back of the neck above the third thoracic vertebra. Byakugan users can detect anything around them within a small radius, the greater the user's skill with the Byakugan, the larger the radius is, which makes them close-range combat experts. The Byakugan also gives the user the ability to see through basically any matter over extremely long distances. A small degree of telescopic vision is also present, as a Byakugan user can focus on a single object at any point within their range of vision. The degree of focus seems to be dependent on the skill of the user. The Byakugan's insight capacity makes it useful for searching, tracking, and identifying targets.

Protection of the Byakugan ability is very important to the Hyuga clan, and has led to the development of an elaborate family hierarchy. Members of the lesser branch house are branded with a cursed seal on their forehead at a young age. Whenever a branch house member dies, the cursed seal will seal the Byakugan ability so that enemies will not be able to discover its secrets.

The Sharingan (写輪眼? literally "Copy Wheel Eye," English manga "Mirror Wheel Eye") is an eye technique (瞳術 dōjutsu?) that naturally occurs in a select few members of the Uchiha clan. The Sharingan is thought to be descended from the Byakugan, but grants the user different abilities and a different insight. The Sharingan does not automatically appear from birth in a user; instead, it will usually appear when the user is in a life-threatening situation, where the power of the Sharingan could save them. After this first appearance, the user can then call up the Sharingan any time they wish. The power of the Sharingan is judged through the number of tomoe in the eye, with a maximum of three in each. The Sharingan's first and most well known ability is to memorize any technique that it witnesses. It can memorize any standard form of jutsu with perfect accuracy, allowing the user to use the techniques as his own. In order to reproduce copied jutsu, however, one must have the necessary skill or ability to perform them. An example of this would be someone who uses a technique that requires great speed. The copier must be able to move at the same speed to re-produce the technique correctly. The Sharingan's second ability is granting the user incredible clarity of perception, allowing them to track fast-moving objects with ease and even predict the subsequent movements of those objects. The ability to track and predict movement is largely based on individual skill, as unskilled users have much more trouble tracking fast-moving objects.

A fully-evolved Sharingan can track even the quickest opponents, though, like the first ability, it doesn't necessarily mean the user has the ability to react to it. This perception is also great enough to see through genjutsu and to observe the movement and flow of chakra, but not to the same extent or clarity as the Byakugan. It also gives color to chakra. Additionally, the Sharingan grants the user exceptional analytical powers, allowing them to instinctively pick up on various visual clues with little difficulty. One example of this would be the users ability to be able to decipher word-for-word what someone has said just from reading their lips, though they may not hear a word that has been said.

The Sharingan's third capability is a unique brand of hypnosis that involves suggesting actions and thoughts to the opponent. When used in conjunction with the aforementioned aspects of the Sharingan, this allows the user to perfectly mimic every move their opponent makes, even before they do, making it appear as if the user can see the future. It also allows for other forms of hypnotism, such as putting an opponent to sleep, replaying memories to someone else, or creating various illusions to fool an opponent.

It is possible to transplant Sharingan eyes from one person to another, however, transplanted eyes do not work as well in a non-Uchiha body. Because the posessor of the transplanted eye does not have the bloodline trait to properly host this technique, it puts a great strain on the user physically and may take several hours or days to recover from the physical drain. Uchiha clan members are not burdened with this weakness; while activation of the Sharingan does consume chakra, the drain is so small as to be almost insignificant.

The Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼 Mangekyō Sharingan?, literally "Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye") is a heightened form of Sharingan.  There has only been one shinobi to witness the elite power of this form. The requirements to obtain this powerful form is not entirely understood. To date there is one out of the two known sharingan possessors in Faerun to have obtained this level of the sharingan. It has been said that the appearance of the sharingan changes with the release of this technique with the tomoe coming together to form a unique pattern.

The Puppet Technique (傀儡の術 Kugutsu no Jutsu?, Viz "Art of the Puppet Master", English TV "Puppet Master Jutsu") was created in order to convert a form of entertainment into a style of combat. The technique utilizes strings of chakra extending from the user's fingers to control a puppet's movements. Those who can effectively use this ability are rare, but once mastered the user can hide in a safe location while his puppet does the work for him. Skilled puppeteers are able to manipulate multiple puppets simultaneously. These chakra strings also allow puppeteers to manipulate other people or objects, controlling their movements to help or hinder their progress.

The art of puppetry varies in usage from person to person, as puppets can be equipped with an array of different weapons and tools to make a battle easier. Puppeteers can also combine the abilities of their puppets to increase their effectiveness.

(八門, Hachimon?, English TV "The Eight Inner Gates") are eight specific points on a person's chakra circulatory system. They limit the overall flow of chakra within a person's body. The basis for the idea of the chakra gates comes from the body's limits on the functions within it. This makes the body much weaker, but it keeps the body from expiring too soon. By opening these gates, the user can surpass their own physical limits at the cost of extreme damage to their own bodies. Opening the final gate will grant the user enough strength to surpass a Kage; however, the result of opening the final gate is that all the energy from the opener's cells is used up, resulting in the user's death. The state where all eight gates are opened is called Hachimon Tonkō no Jin (八門遁甲の陣, Hachimon Tonkō no Jin?). The diagram to the right shows the different activation points of each gate.
