Mordel is the largest settlement in the region. Founded decades ago by House Fresleven, it has grown from a military camp into a proper city. Mordel occupies a strategic location atop high ground that commands the river at the northernmost point which most ships can travel upstream. Mordel is a study in contrasts. It’s upper class is urbane and educated, and seriously devoted to the Church of Cymer. The larger lower class is less sophisticated, and much of it pays only half-hearted devotion to Cymer. The Church of Conn and Church of Darlen command more loyalty, at least in the people’s hearts if not as a matter public sentiment. Also, even in the region’s capital, the popular folkways relating to the Cult of Rascarl are commonplace. Rascarl’s emphasis on ancestor worship (and those ancestors’ judgemental ways) make the populace rather superstitious.
