You and your companions slog through the muddy tunnel for about ten minutes before reaching a dry cavern the “troglodytes” must have considered their home. Amidst the scraps of flesh and other trash, you find a small chest that contains 63 silver pennies, 250 copper farthings, and a silver brooch. Along the other tunnel on the way back are two small chambers behind large heavy oak doors seemingly out of place in this dank dirt passage.
3 XP has already gone to the first person to fill out the Doodle poll (Shawn). 2 XP for the next person, and 1 XP to the one after that. Let’s get this done!
We’ve got a Doodle poll up for scheduling our sessions for the next couple months. Please pick as many times as you can make, and we’ll go with the 4 or 5 most popular options.
Hey, everyone. It looks like we’re all set for this Sunday with Jeremy, Shawn, Ray, and David. Keep in mind that without Kirk, we will be lacking the usual spread of snacks. I might have my homemade version of the “40 spice hummus” on hand, but make no guarantees.
Hey, guys. I have a couple rules simplifications we’ll put into effect for the next session. They seem dramatic, but actual play will actually change very little.
Abilities (Stealth, Communication, etc.) are gone, replaced simply by increasing your corresponding Stat at each Level. For example, Gebbel used to have Stealth as an ability, which gave him +3 to any attempt to sneak around and avoid notice. Now, his DEX is just 3 points higher. Simple!
Hit Points are gone. We’ve only gone to task-by-task Combat a couple times in the entire campaign, so they have barely mattered until the recent change to “ante up” HP before Combat. Instead, you’ll ante up Consequences, which are more awesome. I know this might seem like a big hit to the fighters in the group, but when everyone just bets a third (or some other proportion) of their HP on a Combat, it doesn’t really matter whether you have 27 or 3 HP; you’re all a third closer to zeroing out if you fail.
Equipment, weapons, and armor are the next targets for rule enhancements, but I might save that for a future session.
Thanks everyone (Kirk, Ray, David, Jeremy) for today’s session, which featured the introduction of a new player and character (Erasmus) as well as dramatic turn of events! Despite the plot twist, there still seems to be some challenges with group cohesion (among characters, not players) that, while “realistic,” detracts from the kind of game we want to play. I will work to address this in both the rules and game prep for the next session, for which I’ll send out the 30 Boxes invite shortly. Based on what I heard, I think this group would love to play a game like the Masks of Nyarlathotep, which fuses “sandbox” and “horror” into arguably the greatest RPG campaign ever written.
Please welcome Jeremy and Drew, a couple new players who will be trying out this campaign in the coming weeks. It looks like we’re all set for this coming Sunday with Kirk, Ray, Jeremy, and David/Brent.
I’m going to send out an invite to the next session on August 15 in the next couple days. In the unlikely event that more than 5 people can make it, whoever has accepted the invite first will have dibs on the session. Expect sessions thereafter to be every other week.
Rule Adjustments – Skills: In our next session, there will be some minor tweaks to how we handle Skills.
You’ll only need to roll a d10 at the end of the session to advance your Skills, making it twice as likely that you’ll improve any given Skill each session.
I’m going to get “old school” on you all and request that we emphasize descriptions of actual character actions rather than simply proclaiming Skill Rolls from now on. In other words, you should be describing how you’re looking for that secret door rather than just saying that you’re doing it and rolling the dice. Your description might give you a bonus, or it might even eliminate the need for a roll altogether.
While Gebbel and Balmar sell off the party’s haul in Bandahurr, the rest will investigate a giant rat infestation in Restenford and begin to forge a new peace between the town and the Wawiki.
New Rule – Hit Points as Stakes in Combat: At the beginning of each combat, each side must “ante up” Hit Points that they are staking on the outcome of Combat. These HPs are added to the rolls you make, so the strength of your party will actually contribute to your ability to succeed. The losing side loses all HPs they “bet” on the Combat, and the winning side also loses all HPs they bet, less their margin of success. This replaces the “kill one orc for every 4 points by which Kirk’s roll exceeds the GM’s” approach we’ve been using. Effective as of the July 18 session.
