Born without the usual gnome inclination toward illusion magic, Zag was instead born with an affinity for fire. He grew up poor, in a rough section of Boroska, and had frequent run-ins with the law. His parents, recognizing a startling intellect in their son, enrolled him at Boroska’s Arcanarium to keep him out of trouble. There he studied magic, thinking to become a mage. Sadly, he had no knack for spell casting. Instead he found himself drawn to the esoteric science of Alchemy. Zagreb poured countless hours into his studies, mixing and experimenting with various chemicals and aethers. Before long he was at the top of his class, but the slow pace of scientific methods began to bore and frustrate him. He yearned for more knowledge, more power. Zagreb soon started experimenting in subjects outside the accepted course of study. He looked into forbidden knowledge, arcane secrets. How to change one’s body, how to maximize the fiery potential of explosives, formulae that his teachers would pale at the thought of.
It was when one of his experiments went awry, and he blew up half of his lab, that the Masters at the Arcanarium took notice. Zagreb was unceremoniously expelled from the school, disgraced and furious. Vowing revenge on the Masters, the Arcanarium, and society in general, Zag set out forMagnyr in the north. It was there, he had heard, that some secret, underground labs were experimenting with the very same types of formulae he had been.
Zagreb is arrogant, with a acutely defined sense of superiority. He bristles at the thought of anyone holding him back, or stymying his efforts. He has a short temper, and delights at outwitting those who have incurred his anger. Zag is obsessed with change, believing that stagnation is the the worst possible fate. His goal in life, now, is to amass enough knowledge and power, that one day he might exact his revenge on those who wronged him. In fact, he plans on taking it a few steps further and setting up all of society to crumble and burn. From there, he hopes, it will rise again, unbiased against the pursuit of all knowledge.
