Shadow Age

The universe was formed by the Primordials, beings of pure chaos, both creators and destroyers. In creating the universe, they also created their counterparts, Gods. Unlike the Primordials, the Gods saw the creations for what they were and each of them took some parts of the universe for their own. When those parts were to be destroyed by the whims of the Primordials, the Gods fought to protect their property/charges/loves.
So the Titan War began. The Gods gained strength from the Universe, but the Primordials’ power knew no bounds. They lashed out destroying many of the Gods. Even though the Gods suffered casualties, they regrouped and managed to destroy one of the Primordials. That changed everything.
The first Primordial death caused a wave of chaos to blow through the Gods. Many of them grew stronger from this, taking the raw energy and molding it to their wills. Some were warped by it, becoming twisted with the tainted power. But this was the turning point for the Gods. With each Primordial defeated, the Gods gained power. Finally, some of the Gods grew tired of the killing and began to imprison the Primordials instead; but, either way it was the end of the war.
Once the war was over the Gods turned their powers back to the universe, shaping and repairing their chosen parts. The Gods tainted by the Primordial wake fled into the empty places of the universe to form their own new realms, feeling disconnected from the world that they once owned a part of. Once the world was repaired from the war ravages they sat back to watch life unfold. This life still had the endless potential caused by the power of the Primordials and the Gods began to revel in it.
They would come down from their abodes to take part in the dramas that would unfold in the lives of the races, some manipulating and some just observing. The races were taught of the Gods and began to worship them. This faith pleased the Gods and sustained them. What they didn’t realize is that the connection between them and their followers had forced out the absorbed primordial power and this power was going to wreak havoc again.
The cosmology of the universe formed by the Primordials and tended by the Gods was balanced. The world was populated with life which was reflected in each of the border realms, The Fey Wild and The Shadowfell. All life in the world was connected to each other through the Spirit Realm. The Spirit Realm links all other realms by its life forms. It was this realm that the primordial chaos seeped into.
Primal magic taps directly into the Spirit Realm, so unlike the other magics, has the potential to be able to touch all realms. As the taint of the primordial chaos warped Primal Magic the world began to change. The Fey Wild, which is more connected to nature, began to whither and twist from what the Primal users were doing. The Gods, sensed the taint starting to enter them, and quickly severed the connection to their worshippers. In doing so, they became powerless to stop the events that were unfolding below them and could only watch as everything they had worked for was undone.
The world continued to warp and the Fey Wild started to fight against the taint. The Shadowfell seemed the least effected by the infected Spirit Realm. As the world twisted and the Fey Wild shrank, the Shadowfell grew and formed a system that let the Spirit Realm pass through it without affecting it.
The primordial taint eventually joined fully with the spirits of the Spirit Realm and gained consciousness. This awakening ruptured reality. The Fey Wild and all Primal magic was destroyed. The Fey Wild’s destruction made the world unstable and its destruction seemed imminent, but it was the Shadowfell that saved the world. The consciousness of the Spirit Realm passed through the Shadowfell momentarily making it aware of the situation. In this moment, it merged itself with the rest of the universe freeing it from the Spirit Realm’s new consciousness but also imprisoning the world within it.
This new world left behind remembers the time before and seeks to return to it, but is it possible. The conduit to the Gods is no more; just a weak thread has been reestablished as the Gods try desperately to reconnect to their followers. Beings from other realms are stuck and forced to establish themselves in the world. The power of the Far Lords merges with the Consciousness as it passes into the world, bringing with it bits of the chaos and warping the world. Nothing is as it seems anymore.
