A surge of cameras flash when President Johnson stands at the podium. Behind him, a host of military uniforms, naval uniforms, and other suits all sit. Johnson takes a drink of water as he is about to go live to the nation. He sets the drink down, and wipes at the sweat as he fumbles with the lines in his head. He takes one large breath as the red light blinks, and he goes live. His body will not betray his anxiety, and he starts with a careful smile.
“Good evening America. Today marks the start of a new beginning for all of us. For today is our future.”
The reporters eat it up.
“Today we will send a ship off into the heavens and stare at the face of God. This is truly our proudest moment as human beings. We will send a ship out deeper than anyone has ever dared to go before, in hopes of calling another world home.”
He turns to his side, and the holographic imaging kicks in. The planet is a perfect orb of blue, and greens, and purples, around the planet circles one blue moon. The crowd ignites, and more flashes come, followed by applause. The President grins at the planet, and feels the weight of acheivement sinking in. Then he quickly turns back to the crowd.
“The people aboard the ship have all the pleasures of home: shopping centers, gaming areas, restaurants, houses. We like to think of it as a city in a space bottle. This ship is destined to reach this planet,” he waves his finger at the flickering hologram. “This planet two thousand and seven or Athena as we call her. She is our future. Over fifty thousand people have agreed to stay aboard Agrimon. Soon when we look to the stars, we may all smile and know that there is intelligent life out there.”
He pauses letting the words sink in. “I will take your questions now.”
The audiance lights up with thousands of voices. The screen flickers on the television set and it is quickly shut off. That was yesterday, today the darkness of space is lit only by the tension and excitement of the voyage.
