We were not always We, once we were I. We had individuality and weakness. We were the Rivollen Tribe and we lived in the wastes of the world. Life was hard. Elf fought with elf. We banded together only for a time but then went alone other times. Life was harder than it needed to be. We had no community, just the tribe.
We raided ruins, temples, cities, villages, anything we came across. Sometimes as friends and other times as foes. This one was part of a expedition and survey team. We would scout forwards before the main tribe followed. This one with four others found Sagawehn deep in the ground.
The chamber was not opened in generations. The markings were Thri-Kreen but the symbols were alien. Culture long lost. We opened the inner sanctum and the air was rank. We all saw things. Visions or dreams we were not sure. Two of the others died from the fumes but three returned to the surface. We were sick for days. We thought we would die. Then we got better, but this time we were together.
Our minds were fused. It was confusing at first, three individuals suddenly forced together. The visions were the memories of the five. All the knowledge and wisdom of the individual became shared with the group. This hive mind brought us together. The three survivors realized it was best if the rest of the Tribe joined us and the Rivollen were born.
We spread the hive mind to others in the tribe and as we amassed more and more we came to realize what we were. More journeyed to the shrine and we understood its wisdom. Sagawehn, goddess of insects, created an infection of sorts. She sought to inflict it upon the Eladrin that would destroy her. This infection would bring them her enlightenment and bring them closer to her. Except it didn’t work. The Eladrin adapted and most never developed the hive mind. We deduced that the Elven biology accepted the enlightenment easier than the Eladrin and that we could see the wisdom they could not.
We learned much about Sagawehn, the efforts of the Hive were superior to the Tribe. All worked together and all prospered. We stopped traveling too. We lived in the ruins and worshiped in the shrine. Then we started to expand. As was Sagawehn’s tennant we saw the wisdom in Expansion. We could conquer those around us and grow. With the growth we would become stronger. The Hive would thrive and we grow greater. It was simple.
Other tribes were reluctant to join in at first. We found other races unable to adapt biologically and would leave them be if they didn’t seek to harm the Hive. Most were aggressive and we had to eliminate to protect the whole. Other Elven tribes were a different story. Most refused and had to be conquered. The survivors became Rivollen and the others were laid to rest. Our numbers swelled and our community grew.
Then came the Templars. Bastions of individuality they feared our culture. They slaughtered most of the tribe but captured a few. This one was among those captured. We were hauled across the world and to a disgusting city. The masses swarmed like insects but with no purpose. A million ants working alone and accomplishing nothing. Few of the Rivollen survived and those few were separated and caged. Over the years more and more died. The voices died off slowly and soon only this one spoke. This one fears not it’s own demise but the loss of the Hive. If this one could escape it could spread the divine enlightenment again and rebuild the Hive.
