Jai was born in the then peaceful town of Wheloon in Cormyr. His parents were simple but successful merchants who made a decent living selling goods to ferry workers on their way through town. When Jai was 5 or 6, he’s not exactly sure how old he is, Wheloon was discovered to be a major center of secret Shar worshipers. By royal decree the town was converted to a prison city and walled off with brick and magic. Even though his parents were not part of the cult (or were they?) they, along with the few other innocents were imprisoned anyway. Not being part of the cult Jai’s, parents didn’t last long after the town crumbled into chaos and Jai was left to fend for himself. Forced to join a gang to survive, Jai toughened up in a hurry. Even though he was part of a gang he made only one true friend, Ferian.
10 years after Wheloon was walled off from the rest of Faerun Jai and Ferrian met a newly imprisoned wizard who claimed to have a way out of the city but required physical assistance to actually escape. Seizing this one opportunity to escape Jai and Ferrian slipped away from their gang and managed to escape from Wheloon with the wizard.
After escaping Jai and Ferrian quickly parted company with the mysterious wizard and set off on a trek across Faerun. Heading northwest they eventually encountered a mercenary company and were recruited into the organization. The pair ended up a squad led by a young Rassimohn and served in the company for several years before the fateful events at the monastery. Ferrian perished in one of the earlier skirmishes with the goblinoids.

Jai has gang tattoos from his time in Wheloon. He keeps them mostly covered but they are a potential source of problem if someone recognized them. Jai’s has a particular fondness for Fallcrest because it reminds him of Wheloon before it was a prison city.
