Shamiid Drantus always knew she was different, and not just because of here pale skin and different coloured eyes. She knew because although her parents tried to treat her the same as her brothers and sister, she still felt excluded and separated.
When she reached puberty, the claws began to grow. This is also when she was driven away from her family. No one likely wanted her to leave, but the mob had grown and she felt she had to go, to protect her family.
The following months were horrible. Living on the streets was a lot tougher than any of the romanticised fairy tales her had been read to as a child by her mother. People hated her but she didn’t know why.
Until about 5 months after fleeing, a man came and spoke to her. He introduced himself as Professor Petros Lorrimor. He said he had been looking for her and was pleased to have found the “part of him he had lost”. He explained to Shamiid about changelings and who they and where they come from, and that he had managed to find her sanctuary within the Pharasman Order of the Red Sands. It was not long after she had been delivered, that Professor Petros left.
The potential meaning of the Professor’s comments did not pass Shamiid by, and she ached to find out the truth, but dared not approach him to ask. Was she really his daughter? Anyway, Shamiid had a new focus, being trained as a priestess and learning all she could about The Lady of Graves. The Order of the Red Sands focus on a person’s death, and make sure that the rights are enforced and standards do not slip.
Her life in the order started with the usual suspicion. A changeling’s birth is strange and some considered it to be against Pharasma’s blessing. But it soon became clear that Shamiid had a special link with her Goddess. First she had been given the job of attending the rose garden, where her plants flowered an unusually bountiful supply of thornless black roses, and a particularly outspoken rival started to bleed under the nails.
A fast track up the ranks followed with Shamiid showing a strong ability to deal with difficult child births, and an unusually strong spiritual connection when sending recently departed souls to the boneyard. It was not long before she found herself in active service.
