Born on the Mara World of Amshan some 34 years ago, Sharden grew up in a poor mining family with little in the way of prospects for his future. Possessed of tremendous agility and coordination, he nonetheless struggled to make ends meet and help feed his family. On the night before his 18th birthday, the skies lit up as Mara and Curia forces clashed for the first time. The planet was subsequently bombarded from orbit, and while Sharden’s family lived through the night, many were killed that evening. The next day’s dawn broke on Sharden volunteering for the Mara navy, with the hopes that he could help prevent further destruction. His innate reflexes were not overlooked, and he was trained to become a pilot, on special assignment to defend the Mara Throneworld, Shiresh.

The next decade saw numerous victories and promotions for Sharden, as well as the start of a relationship with Thamala, a Shireshi woman he met while on leave. His blossoming career was cut short, however, when during a large engagement his fighter was skimmed by anti-fighter batteries. While he managed to avoid death at the hands of his human enemies, his docking gear was damaged, and he was injured in the docking process. After months of painful surgery and recovery, ready to hop back into the pilot’s seat, he found out that almost overnight, a cease-fire and tentative peace were reached with the humans. There was no need for him to return to combat duty.

The Mara government, with tensions high as they remained, hired Sharden to travel with delegates to human worlds and “ensure that promises and contracts were being upheld as well as gather any pertinent information regarding threats to the Mara.” His less than savory purposes included assisting those who would make the humans less capable of fighting the Mara. His first assignment saw him overseeing a Mara research team, ensuring that no foul play (both on the parts of the Mara researchers and potential human saboteurs) came about. Perhaps his most notable stint in human territory was covertly funding and protecting a human smuggler whose smuggling of weapons to various resistances and of artifacts away from the government gave breathing room to the Mara. His four years among the humans removed most of the resentment he held toward them regarding the war, as he found there is a lot in common between them and the Mara.

Now that tensions are beginning to ease between the two races, Sharden no longer saw a need to act as an intelligence asset for the Mara, and severed his ties with the government, (ostensibly amicably). He believes that integration and cooperation are the future for the two races, regardless of what anyone else might suggest. He’s willing to put the war to rest as a result, and while he expects that bigotry and hate will run rampant in the short term, the destinies of humanity and Mara-kind are intertwined.

“I can no longer abide by the shortsighted policies of deception and duplicity which govern our interactions with the humans. The war, while perhaps necessary for the growth of our species, will taint our relationship for generations to come, and I can only hope that from this point forward a program of mutual trust and respect will emerge as the default diplomatic method. In keeping with this philosophy, I tender my resignation.” ~Sharden’s Letter of Resignation
