Emperor of the githyanki invaders, Zetch’r’r gained his current position when the previous ruler, the lich queen Vlaakith, was slain twenty-five years ago. Very soon after he came into power, he set in motion the events leading to the full-out war that currently rages in the world. In order to gain the throne of Tu’narath, the githyanki capital, he allied himself with Tiamat.
Tiamat’s former red exarch, a red wyrm by the name of Ephelomon, formed a pact with Gith long ago that pledged several wings of red dragons to the service of the githyanki. However, the clever queen worded the deal in such a way that Tiamat would never hold power over her people. Eager to claim their wartime prowess as her own, Tiamat formed a new pact with Zetch’r’r, guaranteeing him the throne as long as he pledged Tu’narath to the Chromatic Dragon’s use.
Zetch’r’r’s rise to power came shortly after Vlaakith’s death – which he arranged by hiring adventurers from the mortal world to assassinate her. He originally sought her removal because he led a githyanki sect known as the Shasal Khou, who are dedicated to reuniting the two gith peoples. While such an effort sounds noble in theory, its practice has led to bloodshed both in the Astral Sea and the Mortal World.
Though githyanki are given to strict obedience to their hierarchical military structures, not all of them are loyal to Zetch’r’r, owing to the fact that he halted the githyanki’s Eternal Crusade (the never-ending war against illithid, carried on in Gith’s name). The Champions discovered a small sect of worshipers (the Separatists) at the Fane of Chaniir that denounced his actions, and even granted the party a small amount of aid.
In Chapter 12, the heroes caught a glimpse of the tyrant – a tall, proud-looking githyanki with the bearing of a veteran warrior. He wore Vlaakith’s iron crown on his brow and looked down upon his lessers with his one good eye – the other replaced by a smooth stone of onyx. Two silver blades hung from his waist, as well as the scepter of Ephelomon.
At the climax of the chapter, the heroes fought and managed to defeat Zetch’r’r, taking his eye, his crown, and the scepter as trophies. So ended the Coalition’s War.
