Sheen’s overriding desire is to work. She grew up among the dwarves of Undermountain, a dour, taciturn folk with little use for a human girl. They set her to work as soon as she could pump a bellows. She grew up to be a tough, silent, hardworking woman, and when it seemed she was old enough to take care of herself, the Dwarves escorted her up to Waterdeep and left her there.
Sheen discovered that it was harder to find work than she’d expected. To be a smith in the city, you had to join a guild, meaning you had to spend long years apprenticed to a master smith. Even if she were willing to slave as an apprentice in a trade she already knew, no one would take an apprentice as old as Sheen.
Things would likely have gone badly for her if she had not encountered Gyderic. He found her demonstrating her skill in a smithy and was enchanted with the sight of her. Her green eyes nearly glowed with ferocious concentration as she worked the metal, her long coppery hair quivering with each beat of the hammer. He offered her a position on the spot.
It was not, however, the position she had expected. He took her to the Cullers and she was examined in humiliating detail, then finally accepted to join their brotherhood. The transformation was painful and unpleasant, but she endured it without complaint. The council began training her in their arts, which she found fascinating and combined with her smith-work.
Gyderic paid court to her and she accepted his affections cheerfully, if not with any deep or overpowering passion. It was a very pleasant existence, and the crash, when it came, was completely unexpected. Gyderic asked her to manufacture a strange device for him; it seemed innocent enough, a mere whim, so she was happy to do it. When it was complete, he accepted the gift and went away for a few hours.
By the evening, she was growing worried, but her concern did not last much longer. Four warriors burst into her home and dragged her before the council. Gyderic was dead, caught in a plot to assassinate one of the council and steal a priceless artifact. Her device was the means of his assault, so she was implicated in the crime. She swore her innocence over and over as the elders brutally stripped her mind, uncovering everything she had ever done, thought, or felt. The inquisition lasted for hours, Sheen weeping or screaming in agony and pleading with them to believe her.
In the end, they could find no sign of perfidy in her, and she was cast out of the enclave to find her own way in the world. She made her way, at first, by selling her possessions one at a time while her mind slowly recovered. Now she has little left and wonders what will become of her.
