Deadlands: How the West Was Weird

Alfred Roxley

Mad Scientist

Alfred Roxley

Description

Bio

Alfred was born into a fairly wealthy family, he was well taken care of and was even able to get a full education. During his time at college he became very interested in Ghost Rock and the fabulous things being created through study of this material. He quickly found his way into all the science classes he could to learn more about it.

After graduation he immediately sought out a job that would allow him to further experiment and learn about Ghost Rock. This led him to an apprenticeship with the Smith & Robards company. He quickly became a fixture in the research department and spent much of his free time trying to accomplish new things with Ghost Rock. Before too long he had learned enough to start contributing to the designs for their new inventions.

It wasn’t until he started working on a new device of his own design that he began to question his position in the company. His father had drilled it into him that no man should benefit more from your hard work than you do. Since his contract with S&R stipulated that anything created while in their employ belonged to them, he would benefit very little from his invention. Since he had been using the company’s lab and materials, they already knew that he was well on his way to finishing it. Even formally terminating the contract wouldn’t return the rights to him since most of the work was done under the contract.

Not seeing any other options Alfred decided to simply vanish. Go somewhere where he could finish the work on his own, and then market the device as his own creation. According to all the rumors he’d heard, out west was still fairly lawless and he could hide there until his work was done and he’d established himself.

The main difficulty in this plan was that he’d need a fair amount of money to keep his research going. He couldn’t go to his parents since it would be risky getting caught and pulled into a legal mess from his contract. That same contract would also make acquiring a new job difficult. He planned on getting some odd jobs to fund his research until his invention was complete enough to be able to earn money with.

Personality:
Alfred is an inquisitive person, always eager to examine and explore things to see if it might be useful in a new invention. He’s quick to correct mistakes and faulty logic despite being a little absent minded. He might forget his coat or where he left his drink, but ask him something from the books he’d read and he’ll give you the right answer.
