Background (Need to know)
From Boston, parents killed when I was 5, raised by my Uncle (main Professor of Anthropology). He is my only family. Books, history, studying culture/people is his life and is now mine. I don’t know why I had to be an orphan, but there are other questions that can be answered.
Rising Conflict (Bob’s my Uncle (pen/journal))
We have traveled a lot to research different questions posed to my Uncle. I have advanced quickly through school and now work as his assistant through the college. This is my life, I have no personal friends, just contacts and Uncle. Uncle dies, but I continue his work. But I am getting to handle research questions that only Uncle saw before. By choosing to carry on my Uncle’s work, I seem to have entered into a contract — or at least fulfilling Uncle’s. I don’t know what all will be encompassed by this — or if I am an independent contractor or a paid employee (with company benefits?). But I received a package after fielding my first question. It wasn’t too hard, I found a section of the estate I hadn’t been to before with a number of rooms that contained the book I needed. I don’t know why I hadn’t been there before… or even why I never realized that I hadn’t. I wonder if that first question was a test? Anyways, the package was a pen. It is beautiful, and has my Uncle’s name on it. I don’t know who sent it, I can’t even tell them he is gone, or return it. So I will keep it, with me always, as a reminder of Uncle.
New question today. I wrote it down in my notebook as I always do as I begin my research. There are so many questions that can arise from one that I always write them down to chase down later — but always the first, so I won’t get sidetracked. I never got past the first one because it wrote back.
The Story — Learning Curves (Brains before Beauty)
I got a question today that can’t be answered in a book. Bob agrees. He cave me an address. This will be the first time that I meet one of the other contacts. His name is Q and he provides me with some gear for field work. The field research involves going to a club that the White Court operates and determining if an historical artifact will have a negating affect on their powers. I will be wearing a chastity belt?! and approaching a pre-identified lower rung member. Q has provided backup measures if the belt doesn’t work. I will need to dress provocatively to ensure I get an accurate test.
The address took me to a warehouse, with a front door. An actual stoop, light, doorbell and doorknocker, and mail flap. Way out of place. I knocked. A young man answered the door. Everyone I know is old, this guy looks like he is actually my age — maybe just a few years older! e says “I don’t know you, ring the doorbell.” And closes the door in my face. Cantankerous isn’t always age specific. I ring the doorbell, it bites. There is a small smear of blood on my finger, like from a pinprick…? Now I’m angry.
He opens the door - "So Fiona, related to Bob, working at the University, age 22, no listed phone number, classified address; I know where you live and have now added my number to your cell phone. Under Q -"
“Who are you?!” The only way to slow him down seems to be interruption. He has managed to get me inside, and close the door in the meantime. “And I don’t have a cellphone,” I mutter somewhat affronted by the concept.
“Well, it’s more like a small, ultra-fast computer,” the young man says. And I find myself holding my new cellphone. “Bob objected, with reason, but I have not detected any magical disturbances in your field. This is fantastic! Finally someone who can field test,” he begins to grin and his this fevered gleam in his eyes. I also begin to notice my surroundings. I have never seen so many electronics… Stuck together?..
“I think you’d better start from the beginning…”
His expression sobers somwhat and by the glow of 20+ monitors guides me over to a tatty couch to sit down.
“I knew your Uncle, I am sorry for your loss.”
Guest Star — Thick as Thieves([TBD])
Graber needs information about a specific artifact, and where it is held — including defenses. He is not hte first person to ask about this. Fiona provides the information in an academic way, but later finds the item has been stolen, and as disturbed to be a part of it.
Guest Star Redux — The Protector ([TBD])
Fiona is able to research the clan of ghouls, tying them into the red court. This helps Ted protect the girl until she can be reunited with her family.
