Isaak and Garrick met this mad apostate in the woods, near the bandit camp. They first mistook him for the child-killer (who they had not seen) and fought him after he hit Isaak with his staff. He nearly killed Garrick and was pacified by Isaak into leaving. He told the latter to seek him out ‘when he grows up’ though it isn’t clear whether he meant it as a challenge or a gesture of friendship.

The old mad hermit ranted about ‘the thief’, which Isaak intuited to mean the child-killer.
