Eberron - Return of the Lich Queen

The Library

Saturday – August 28th, 998 YK

Evening

You make your way to the library and within the chamber stands row upon row of oaken shelves, each sagging under the weight of hundreds of heavy leather-bound tomes. Magically lit stained-glass portraits of what appear to be nobles and kings hang along the walls.

A slender woman, her head shaved except for a central topknot, stops short where she was running toward the door ahead of 5 robed and hooded men. You have time to see her slip a book of some sort into the pouch at her belt, and then race for you without a word.

The five men pull out large blood red blades as the woman draws a cruel-looking weapon. A length of chain connects a wicked-looking hooked blade to a metal skull with a dagger protruding from its mouth. The woman smiles as she spins the blade to a blur in her hands.

Tentacles and a Temptress

January 24, 2010 10:54

Saturday – August 28th, 998 YK

Evening

The front doors part to reveal a stately interior hall some 40 feet high. Four enormous marble columns bear the visages of what appear to be hobgoblin kings, presumably from the Dhakaani Empire. Tapestries hanging from the ceilings depict idyllic meadows and blood-soaked battlefields. What is likely the most recent addition to Vorgaard’s collection is a chilling rendering of a frozen field of corpses in the Mournland.

On the floor beneath the Mournland landscape lie two men in steward’s livery. One is badly bludgeoned, and a crossbow bolt sprouts from the other’s neck like a sapling.

Tall stained-glass windows line the walls. Those facing the west wing of the house reflect the red glow of the blazing fires raging there. Interior doors set in the opposite wall from the entryway lead farther into the estate.

An Emerald Welcome

Saturday – August 28th, 998 YK

Evening

As you sail towards the estate, rain begins to fall. A storm is approaching. Thunder clouds and lightning make their steady way south towards you. After a day at sea through rough stormy weather, you approach the mainland and see the tall foreboding cliffs of Cape Far. Waves violently smash against the base of the cliffs. You maneuver your vessel down the Cape toward safer water and make your way to Vorgaard’s private dock.

Once there, you see two ships moored to docks. Morthos recognizes one of the ships as the same that left port before you.

“There is Dura’s ship Sejik. I saw it leave Regalport during the commotion on the docks. At the time I had no idea who was aboard.”

“No matter Morthos. We are here now. You will have your chance to say hello.” Sejik smiles.

Race to the Docks

Friday – August 27th, 998 YK

Evening

As Kohl, Taveah and Miklos walk down the cobbled streets of Regalport on their return back to the Swiftwind, footsteps are heard from behind.

Taveah is first to spot the cloaked figure. It is the same person seen in Adderport. It senses it has been spotted and ducks down a maze of alleyways. Taveah quickly gives pursuit.

“Kohl! Miklos! Quickly this way!”

The cloaked quarry barrels through the dark alleys, but Taveah keeps the figure in her sight. As she races through the cobbled maze, she is reminded of the many cat and mouse games she played as a child.

“Run from me will you? Let’s see how fast you really are.”

Miklos and Kohl struggle to keep up with their raven haired ally.

“She’s a fast one isn’t she?” Miklos pants.

“I’ve never bested her, though this armor isn’t helping.” Kohl grumbles.

They watch as she darts down another corner.

Regalport Arrival

January 11, 2010 10:40

Far – Barrakas 27th, 998 YK
Friday – August 27th, 998 YK

Evening

After 10 days at sea, you reach your destination. Rippling in the wake of a Zilargo trade ship, the setting sun casts a cold crimson reflection across Regalport Bay. The air is cool and windy and the gray evening clouds are rolling in. In the distance, a city lies nestled in the bay’s protective embrace. A handful of ivory towers rise from the city proper beyond Regalport’s lengthy stretch of boardwalks and docks. A large hospitality enclave, bearing the Blink Dog heraldry of House Ghallanda, sits in the center of the dock district, offering travelers respite after their long journey.

Too many ships to count line the docks, but one stands out among them like a half-orc at a gnome’s tea party: It is High Prince Rygar’s flagship and it is an impressive vessel, whose soarwood hull is finished with mithral plating wrought to appear like a scaly hide. From some angles, the ship resembles a gargantuan dragon riding the waves more than a mundane sailing vessel.

Return to Adderport

Zol – Barrakas 17th, 998 YK
Tuesday – August 17th, 998 YK

Afternoon

You return to Adderport and head to the Swiftwind to meet with Sur’kil.

You are greeted below deck in the dining hall.

“Greetings, friends.” He says with anticipation. “What discovery have you made?” Sur’kil pauses and notices your marks.

“Oh, I see. You… have changed. Tell me what has happened? How did you obtain these marks? I must have a thorough account of the expedition. Please do not leave any detail out. I must know about everything, traps, creatures, anything of note.”

Kohl steps forward. “We were attacked by the Order of the Emerald Claw on our return from the Temple. They demanded that we give them something called the Dragon’s Eye. What trickery is this? How did they know of our return, Sur’kil?”

Marked

January 03, 2010 10:55

Zol – Barrakas 17th, 998 YK
Tuesday – August 17th, 998 YK

Morning

After two more grueling days you are but a few hours out from Adderport. Suddenly. you each feel a nagging itch suddenly flare into a dull burning sensation. More than just the annoying itch of your leather chaffed skin. The burn intensifies and you are overwhelmed with pain. Suddenly a pulse of light erupts from the burn and fades as quickly as it came. On your skin, a crimson dragonmark seems to twist and writhe as its colors catch the light.

Morthos hisses as his mark takes shape on his inner left forearm. Kirin holds his face in agony. The mark emblazoned across the right eye. Sejik grits his teeth as his mark burns into the palm of his left hand. Taveah holds the side of her head. Her right ear and jaw glow with aberrant light. Kohl tears his breastplate off, screaming in pain and drops to his knees. He tears open his tunic and stares in horror at the giant mark across his chest. Miklos holds his neck, straining against the pain. As he lets go, you see his mark is different, identifiable; it burns blue in the shape of the Mark of Scribing.

Roadside Ambush

January 03, 2010 10:50

Sul – Barrakas 15th, 998 YK
Sunday – August 15th, 998 YK

Afternoon

After 3 long days of travel, the sweltering heat of the jungle has lessened only slightly as you emerge on the road to Adderport. The rough track follows the top edge of a plateau, below which you can see the glistening waters of Adder Bay in the distance.

You continue along the road for about an hour and where the jungle closes in on the road as it passes through a narrow gap, a tall and imposing woman stands in the shade of a banyan tree next to three men. Each wear half-helms and grimy tabards with a stylized green claw emblazoned on the front. They eye you warily as you approach.

The woman moves to the center of the road, blocking your path. She eyes Kirin and Morthos knowingly.

“Dura? How did she find us?” Kirin whispers to himself.

The Dragoneye

January 03, 2010 10:48

Zor – Barrakas 12th, 998 YK
Thursday – August 12th, 998 YK

Afteroon

You leave the bloodstained hall of whirling blades behind you and curse those who built this temple. As you make your way further into the tomb, the worked stone gives way to a long conduit of basalt rock. Warm sulfuric air blows through the conduit and the faint sound of boiling rock rumbles ahead. As you peer into the shadows, you can make out a giant rocky staircase at the end of the passage.

As you climb your way up the rock, the hot air and stink of brimstone intensifies. At the top of the climb is a short passage which opens into a massive cavern. The hot air is stifling, and the deep rumbling sound of lava assails your ears. Fiery wisps of smoke dart along the cavern floor like infernal dervishes and a red-orange glow of molten rock illuminates the walls of the chamber.

Strange shapes and shadows appear to writhe within these walls. At first, you think they are just distortions due to the heat, but as your eyes adapt to the sting of brimstone in the air, the shapes on the walls can be seen more clearly. They bear the distinctive swirls and sharp lines of dragonmarks, though they do not resemble any marks you recognize.

The Grinder

January 03, 2010 10:45

Zor – Barrakas 12th, 998 YK
Thursday – August 12th, 998 YK

Morning

A constant thrumming rises in your ears over the last fifty paces along the corridor, and you finally understand why. Up a few short steps, beyond a door reveals a dark chamber in front of you. Suddenly the room flashes with light as jets of flame roar from the walls. Within are the bristling shadows of rotating metal blades. Scythes sweep out of slim channels in the walls, ceiling, and floor. Whirling columns in the center of the room spin wicked scimitars dangerously. An iron door is at the end of the chamber. 3 thick iron slats run vertically in front of the door, blocking passage. Next to the door is a dizzying array of clockwork levers and locking mechanisms.

The room goes black once more, but only for a moment as the rhythmic pattern of the flame jets ignite the air to reveal your doom.

“You’ve got to be kidding me…” Taveah says desperately.
