Endless Horizons

Freddie Quinn's Prelude

Freddie goes about his day as usual, going to work, it’s a pretty normal day… except something is off. He feels like he’s being watched, observed by somebody unseen. It stays like that for the rest of the day, and Freddie eventually leaves work and locks up.
It’s cold outside and very dark, only the light from a nearby apartment illuminates the road. It only takes a few steps before Freddie freezes in place, the only thing movie is his chest as he frantically breaths and his foggy breath. He notices strange eyes upon him, red and predatory they look upon him. The creature steps out of the darkness, and Freddie is stricken with fear when he sees only the silhouette of a humanoid thing… a thing that attacked him once before. Only a moment it stands there, perfectly still, when it ferociously jumps toward Freddie.
Doja leaps from his side, ready to intercept the blow. When they touch, the creature tries to grab the dog. Doja dodges the creature. It’s hands are illuminated only for a second, but during that time Freddie saw black fur and a beastly hand with sharp claws. Doja attempts to bite the thing, but it grabs the dog and begins to squeeze the life out of him. Freddie grabs a nearby bottle and tosses it at the creature, and even attempts to take a swing at it, but the creature doesn’t even seem to notice his attempts. The contact feels hairy, sticky and dirty, like his hand may always stink of this filth.
In his desperation he points his hands at it, and streaming out of them is a strange foggy but immaterial substance that clouds the area. As it touches the creature, it’s flesh turns see through and incorporeal where the substance makes contact. The creature shrieks in a sound Freddie had never heard and flees into the darkness.
As the creature leaves the area, the substance disperses into the air and he feels dizzy and collapses onto all fours. Strength quickly returns to his limbs, and he gets up only to find himself in the midst of a thick thorn growth. Thorns are all around him, with nothing else in sight at all under a brilliantly starry sky. Doja looks at him, and makes a gesture as to ask him to follow and begins to run. Not knowing what else to do Freddie runs after Doja, wrapping his arms around himself to cocoon his chest. As he runs, the thorns tear at his clothes at first and then at his flesh. The blood runs from his body, but he feels no pain but exhilaration. He closes his eyes feeling more alive than ever before, and when he opens them again he abruptly stops and finds himself standing in a old big forest full of mighty oaks. In front of him stands an ancient gigantic tree that stretches into the sky. Freddie investigates the other trees and realizes that all the trees in the forest slightly bend towards the ancient tree, as if there is a gravity to it. He moves towards the mother tree and notices that it is not made out of bark and wood but flesh. It is alive and in that moment Freddie is incredibly overwhelmed by it’s power. In his head, he feels a pulling and a plea to join the ranks of those that have seen the truth. As Freddie steps closer, pulled in by the message it tells him to eat the forbidden fruit, and to sign the book of the ancestors to join their ranks among the worlds. Freddie looks at the trees root and sees an ancient unmarked tome and besides it an old pen. Freddie opens it and finds it full of signatures, with only a tiny spot remaining for his own. He cannot help it, and he signs it. Just like he always knew how to, but had just forgotten he can feel the life and primal spirit of all around himself. Life is chaos and beauty all in one. There is a power within himself, within everyone, and it awoke.
Freddie come to on the path in front of his work, with Doja liking face. He past out in the street, and must have been here for hours because the sun is already beginning to emerge. The smell of blood rises quickly, as Doja was wounded in the battle, though not direly. He whispers into Freddie’s ear, “I knew that when I saved you that day, I knew that you had the potential for greatness.” As Freddie gets up from the ground, he can feel sincere joy and excitement, but not from himself, from his trusted Doja, his friend, his familiar.
Freddie stumbles towards home, as he is intercepted by a shuttle landing and blocking his path. The shuttle has police markings, but a dark green color that he had never seen before. Two men step out of the shuttle, wearing the same UTW theme of uniform, but with the same dark green color. Both seem on edge, and one of them is pointing a pistol at Freddie.
“Get on the ground you vampire fuck!” the one pointing the pistol barks. The unarmed soldier reaches at a pouch on his belt, from which he pulls a syringe with a green liquid inside and begins slowly walking towards Freddie. Freddie gets on the ground, as Doja growls at the man. “That demon spawn better not fuck with me man, you and it are both coming in!” Doja exchanges a look with Freddie, and they both know the silent message that passes between them. “I will find you.” Doja was trying to say, before he made a leap for a nearby ally. The armed man fires at the dog, but his bullets only strike the concrete floor. Taking this opportunity of swift panic, the second solider jumps on Freddie and while keeping him down, runs a scanning device over the back of his head. “Yeah, this guys brain is all flaring up!” he shouts as he jams the poison down Freddie’s throat. Freddie quickly fades after that.
