The son of Aemon Silversword, last scion of a fading House known only for its weakness, Alain never knew his mother. His father was a drunk and, from what little Alain gleaned from the old man’s rants, it is highly likely that the marriage between his parents was an arranged and loveless one. How his Mother passed – if indeed she actually did; his father was so intent on his own self-destructive tendencies that Alain began to suspect that Aemon had absconded with him early – he knows not, but whatever happened, it led to Sir Aemon being effectively exiled to the small village of Homlet (or Heroham or Borington; the name changes according to the map one looks at) where he spent the remaining years of his life drinking himself into oblivion. Were it not for the town mayor, a retired warrior who once marched alongside paladins, Alain would have likely grown up as self-involved and bitter as his father. From the Mayor, he learned how necessary was Law was to keep society together.
As the son of a knight, Alain should have grown up in relative wealth, but that was far from the case and he spent much of his youth struggling to make ends meet along with the others of his town. Being broad of shoulders and strong of arm, he naturally drew much attention from the young maidens of Homlet, but he had eyes only for a girl his age. He did his best to court her, but his position as the son of a disgraced knight made him something of an outsider and his dreams were crushed when she married another.
He found the courage to continue and set aside his childish dreams by concentrating on the example set by his role model, the Mayor. The village continued and life went on, no matter how pained he was at his loss, which was to be expected. Despite never being truly accepted into the village as one of them, Alain concentrated on being the best he could be, and when the call came forth from Kingsport for a militia, he was the first to volunteer.
One thing troubles him as he ventures out into the world. Before he passed, during one of his drunken rages, his father said something that now makes Alain wonder if the older man was truly his father after all…
