What happens when you wake to find the world that was, was just a dream?
The Undreaming War. Or so the sages, wizards, priests, and others among the Wise are calling it. The War That Wasn’t. The Dying Dream. The Black Sleep. Whatever you name it, it set all to slumber, from babe to king, beast to dragon, stuck in a terrible nighthaunt version of years to come. And then we all woke up. No. Not all of us. The ones who died in the nightmare, they didn’t wake; or if they did, with limbs twisted or minds clouded by the terrors they now saw even awake. But the howling void of a god who was it’s center is gone now, forever. They saw to that, the Children of the Night, the ones who were set against it. We all know. We all saw that final confrontation. The nightmare of a nightmare. They are gone, but in their place they saved a lost god as well, and magic stolen from holy Mystra is the gift he has returned. A fabulous boon. With a price paid by the thousands.
Magic being what it is, and the sudden spark of it showing in so many thanks to Karsus’ Boon, both the low and the high across Faerun have had speech on the terrible aftermath: countless bodies in cities and villages from the Sea of Swords to the Utter East, and beyond. The High Lady of Silverymoon has made overtures to the cities of the Rauvin Vale: Sundabar, Citadel Adbar, Nesme, Everlund and others, to work together to discover the true extent of The Black Sleep. While beasts and orcs have suffered as well, many a village outside the sight of great walls will have lost many, perhaps wracked by wild magic, or given over to pits of the angry dead. This campaign is a roughly Grey Box through 3E-era Forgotten Realms campaign, with some modified world locations and timeline events, utilizing a re-tooled D20 system. The underlying framework grew from a combination of the True20 system and the OMNI system, along with significant creation of new rules and integration of innovative new OGL ideas found in diverse variant systems such as PathFinder, StarGate d20, Trailblazer and others.
