Space is vast, that aint no lie, most never get to experience it as I have, the better part of three days drifting in a coffin of a capsule. I don’t recall much before the sleep, but since I was woke up I can’t forget a thing. It don’t take long when you don’t know who you are to think you may be already dead. As I drifted in the black with no thoughts of my own, my mind wondered to a world of its own creation.
When you’re looking out in the endless dark of space, you think you see things. So when the running lights of the Rascal Puff, I dismissed them. Even as the grapple rocked my little world and began pulling me in to their hold I was so lost in my world I couldn’t process what was happening. Not until I was lookin in the eyes of Jack Paper did I begin to see it for what it was, rescue.
I stayed on the Rascal Puff attempting to regain the missing years. Trying to find out who I was, I found that I didn’t exist, no records of me anywhere in the Cortex. I dug deep looking for anything that would explain my situation, I dug real deep and found something form Earth-That-Was. An ancient story of a man who slept through a great war and woke up with no knowledge of the war, Rip Van Winkle was his name. With out a better one I took his name.
In flashes things would hit me, most was bad . . . real bad, but, something kept coming up. I was standing in a room with 6 other men, and we all spoke at the same time.
“Recognizing that I volunteered, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps.
Acknowledging the fact that I am a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, space, or air, I accept the fact that government expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier.
Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one-hundred-percent and then some.
Gallantly will I show everyone that I am a specially selected and well-trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.
Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender does not exist. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country.
Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor.”
It took weeks to compile the full creed, a search of the cortex finds no mention of a creed anything like. So the only thing I remember from before, no body else seems to remember either. I left the Rascal Puff when the came to port on Lilac.
