To successfully wield The Captain’s Shield to its fullest potential, a character must fulfill the following requirements:
Feats: Weapon Focus (Shield)
Skills: Perception 4 ranks
Though not required to gain access to its powers, throwing the shield requires a minimum of a 14 strength, and is considered an Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Throwing Shield).
Avenger Known Abilities
Avenger is a +1 quickdraw light steel throwing shield, Weaponized.
Throwing Shield: The Captain’s Shield is specially balanced and constructed for throwing, with the following stats:
Weaponized: Avenger’s enhancement bonus applies towards attack and damage rolls, as if the shield were a magic weapon.
Quickdraw Shield: This light shield is specially crafted with a series of straps to allow a character proficient in shields to ready or stow it on his or her back quickly and easily. If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may don or put away a quickdraw shield as a swift action combined with a regular move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw a light or one-handed weapon with one hand and a quickdraw shield with the other in the time it would normally take you to draw one weapon. If you have the Quick Draw feat, you may don or put away a quickdraw shield as a free action.
Though his full name is lost to the mists of time, legends remain of the chain-mailed warrior known only as “The Captain”. He was famed for his fighting style and his legendary, star-laden shield, a fearsome weapon in its own right. Though the Captain’s name is lost, the name of the shield is remembered. To some, it is known as “Wrecker”. However, most scholars agree this is a misinterpretation of its actual name in ancient Thassalonian, which would have been “Wreker” or, when translated correctly – “Avenger”.
It was known that its full use required dedication to the use of shield as an offensive weapon as much as defensive, as well as considerable strength and a focused observation of combat tactics.
