Daniel Parlan Higgens was born in 1957 in Wellesley, Massachusetts. His father, Brennan Higgens owned a cranberry farm which he inherited from his father, an Irish immigrant by the name of Parlan Higgens. Daniel’s main duties on the farm as a child were tending to the chickens and warding off smaller predators such as foxes and raccoons.
Daniel Higgens attended the University of New Mexico where he studied under professor Lewis R. Binford. His studies focused primarily on the Native Americans of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Some of his most well reviewed papers include “Sexual Division of Labor Among Miwok,” “Foraging Techniques Among the Haida,” and “Religion and Magic in the Native Peoples of the Pacific Northwest.” After recieving his PhD in 1984 he was hired by the State Historic Preservation Office of Northern Central California (SHPOoNCCa for short) to conduct survey of potential historic sites and focus on Cultural Resource Management.
In 1990, Higgens was asked to meet with a gentleman from New York by the name of Peter Venkman who had plans to open a franchise in Old Sacramento. Higgens was asked to survey the possible impact of he franchise in the historic credibility of the area. After 3 hours and 45 minutes with Venkman, Higgens had been convinced to approve the opening of the franchise, quit his job as a State Historic Preservation Officer, and become the new owner and operator of a Ghost Busters International franchise. Today, Higgens operates the Sacramento franchise. He currently lives in the Old Sacramento location after moving out of his apartment and selling his car to open the franchise.
