Genasi from Enac tend to be born with one of the corrupted souls due to the influence of “nefarious magics” practiced in the area. Those who are are quickly sent to assist in research of such magics. There are, however, few cases where a Genasi has an affinity for other elements. These few are trained to be sent around the world to gather as many as their bodies can hold. These Genasi are not schooled to be magi, but instead become able warriors.
Sin-Ryu-Kai was born with the corrupted void soul. However he also showed an unexpected affinity for nearly all the other elements. While most Genasi all learn spells of some sort, Sin had little to no success in the magical arts. He instead showed much skill with many different blades. It is common for a Genasi to be skilled in swordplay, but Sin advanced beyond the common levels and became an expert of dual weapon combat. This drew the eyes of many, but Sin would never be truly accepted for his inability to use magic.
To remedy his lack of magical ability, it was decided that he would need to become one of the rare Genasi who have multiple elemental souls. In hopes of having Sin acquire a second elemental soul, he was constantly sent to travel around Sovian, frequently traveling from Enac to Rankali, then from Rankali to Atith, finally returning to Enac. Because of this, Sin has become skilled in survival and is able to handle long travels better than most. After several years of this pilgrimage, Sin still showed no signs of manifesting an additional soul. Because of this, it was decided that Sin was to be sent further from his home in hopes that he might gain another soul.
It was on this journey that Sin finds himself on a ship near the South cape of Agrea. After recovering from the shipwreck, Sin’s memories of his home and original mission were lost. All he can recall is that he is a Genasi of the Void Soul, a corrupted element, and that he has been traveling for many years seeking something. He continues to travel, hoping that he will eventually meet someone who can tell him what it is he has been searching for.

-Teachings of the Genasi Elder of the Twin Soul
Most prodigies live a secluded life of study. Sin, however, was traveling Sovian at a very young age. Barely old enough to hold a sword, he was sent off on his first journey. Most would expect Sin to receive praise and attention due to his multiple elemental affinities, but that was not how his early years were. Due to his lack of ability to use magic, he was shunned from many Genasi circles and was often found alone practicing his sword play.
This upbringing has molded Sin into the adult that he is. He feels uncomfortable if he has to make his own executive decisions, and has become reserved and quiet. His only real social skills revolve around being able to take orders and other mid-combat related dialog. It is difficult for Sin to trust or accept others due to how he was treated as a child, being treated as a gift and a curse by the same people.
Sin was always kept at arms reach even within his own home. His parents saw little in his elemental potential, and only saw the failure that was his affinity for magic. Sin does his best to hid his magical heritage in public, but anyone with any knowledge of magic readily recognizes the runes etched across his body. As an inheritor of the void soul, his runes reveal the dark nature of his origin, so in any magical society outside of his homeland he is also sunned and at times feared. There have been several times where he was wrongly accused of committing crimes with the only “evidence” against him being these runes.
As Sin grew older, these social troubles only increased, as he was seen as less useful with each passing year. Those few who still had any shred of compassion or care for Sin would claim his lack of manifesting a new soul was due to all the pressures and harsh treatments he received, but that did little to alleviate the burdens. The elders have finally reached the point where they will not tolerate a magically inept member of their society, and thus Sin was sent off on his “Final” pilgrimage.
This is how Sin finds himself on the ship on that fateful night…
“If he returns from this alive, and shows no progress, we will need to ‘remedy’ his ‘problems.’”
