Originally enlisted in the Federation Marine Corps, John’s first tour of duty nearly ended in disaster. His unit was assigned to augment the USS Ibn Battutah at Pacifica Secundus when it came under attack by Nausicaan pirates, but thanks to the general incompetence of certain officers, his entire platoon was wiped out, leaving him to spend several weeks dodging Nausicaan hunters in a radioactive wasteland. He was rescued by the USS Magellan when Starfleet retook Pacifica Secundus, but the Magellan came under heavy fire and John was forced by circumstance to step into the role of weapons officer for the small ship. Later, at the bequest of the Magellan’s commanding officer, he was given a battlefield commission and sent to the Academy for further training. As a former marine, he easily fell into the role of a tactical officer.
Many members of the Starfleet officer corps seem to react negatively to him, as if they blame him for the mess at Pacifica Secundus even though he was a lowly corporal at the time.
